Q: What size hose will fit this?

It's 1-1/4 on the inside and 1-3/4 outside. I believe the hose they sell goes on the inside.

Q: How do you stop the water from diverting to the rain barrel in the winter time?

You remove the diverter and cap the spout with provided cover. I like to turn my rain barrels upside down in the winter so they are drained and dry. The diverter works quite well.
