No, I guess that switch is failure. My laser no needs to push and hold the switch.

What should I do if the laser is way out of alignment within its metal housing, making it really innacurate - is there a way to align it?

Hi you can try to rotate the screw and till the laser point to alignment. if the laser far off the center-point too much, maybe the laser parts was loosen,and you need to change a new product.

Can you hit actual balls with the laser attached?

Yes. But, It should not be used on a driving range as the laser may get into other people's eyes.
