Yes, either of the buds can be used solo. All you need to do is place one back in the case and the remaining one still plays solo

Are these loud , i have slight hearing loss so need loud volume ???

I wear hearing aids in both ears. These are comfortable and I can hear clearly - I listen to alot of talking books. Depending on the narrator depends on the level of volume. I have found them fine.
