How big is the slit to put the sign in?

Enough to put 3 to 4 pieces of paper

Can this stand work horizontally or vertically?

It only stands like in the picture, up, it does not lay on its side. The ones I ordered were packaged poorly and 2 out of 3 were broken.

Can these hold a time Magazine?

I would think so. The bottom can expand a little. A thicker magazine would go in there, but the base would no longer be flat.
