I would say the only thing it is compatible with is a trash can.

No it will fit any wide mouth bottles though- I assume the 18oz is a standard mouth bottle, they do make a flex straw lid for smaller bottles

Is the straw long enough for the 40 ounce bottle?

Yes! The straw comes extra long, and you use a ruler included on the packaging to cut it to the various water bottle sizes. Tip: cut it at a 45 degree angle instead of straight across for better performance!
