A suspenseful and enthralling read
Cara Hunter's latest thriller is an electrifying rollercoaster ride that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Murder in the Family starts with the introduction of "Infamous", a seven-part TV investigation that will be delving into the chilling cold case of Luke Ryder's murder, blending the elements of a gripping true crime series with the complexities of a dysfunctional family caught in the midst of it all. What stands out most is Hunter's ingenious storytelling technique. You get to find out the clues as the experts do. The use of episodic transcripts, texts, voicemails, and news clippings masterfully weaves together a tapestry of facts and revelations. It's reminiscent of the suspenseful feeling you get while watching top-notch crime dramas like "Line of Duty." The constant he said/she said conundrums and well-placed cliffhangers at the end of each episode create an addictive reading experience. The Howard family dynamics add an extra layer of intrigue to the story. Hunter expertly portrays their dysfunction, making it an essential part of the narrative. The interactions and behaviour of the experts in the Netflix TV series further enhance the mystery, giving the story a modern, vibrant twist while paying homage to classic crime fiction.Murder in the Family is filled with jaw-dropping moments and clever plot twists that keep you guessing until the very end. The brisk pace, a plethora of unlikeable characters, and a web of lies and cover-ups make for an enthralling read. It's a testament to Hunter's skill in crafting compelling and suspenseful narratives. This book is a must-read if you're a fan of crime thrillers with a modern twist.

Unusual, enjoyable...be aware of presentation on Kindle though!
I REALLY enjoyed this! Although I am going to give some 'even better if' opinions here, I genuinely did enjoy it... It was a slow, and detailed read with careful plotting obviously carried out by Hunter. I can only imagine the planning than went into it...I did have a few issues with my Kindle Paperwhite (as other readers have mentioned too) but it was fine on the Kindle app โ so that's a tip for anyone wanting to read it digitally. The use of a โscriptโ for the TV show format of the book, I think is effective. Perhaps I am biased having used a script within some of my own fiction.Sometimes when I am deep into the action of a book, I find the descriptions of a mountain/the sea etc a distraction and I end up skimming through to get to the juicy parts. Whereas, that doesn't happen here as all that is included is needed and this, for me, was a strength. Any description or things the reader needs to know either comes up within the speech or as italics (as sort of stage direction) in between the speech in an omniscient style.I also really like the inclusion of newspaper cuttings and text messages. I wasnโt so keen on the TV review page that was before each new chapter as I felt it summarised what I had read then made predictions of what might come next. This could be useful for readers who find it difficult to retain all the information (there is lots) but I am not sure about the exposition uses.I DID, however, struggle to remember everything and flicked forward and back (I actually wish I had read it as a paperback) and sometimes struggled to recall which of the specialists was what/who. Although, for some reason, I remembered Laila โ maybe as she is the only female on the specialist team. The interactions between them work well, and the way that the story/what happens unfolds is also effective once you have remembered who, what, why, when and where. I suppose I can see WHY the TV recaps were included as so much happensโฆand is it too much? Possibly, yes.I totally forgot some of the family links and 'who was who' the more other people get involved (you will see what I mean on reading, Iโm sure) and the inclusion of a page of family trees/links/bios would have been useful.Just as you think you are onto something (along with the detectives) then something changes the course and the story takes a different direction โ this is more effective nearer the end than the red herrings in the middle that started to frustrate me.It was also interesting to know that there was likely to be an imposter within the team โ from the hints given and this made it more important to know who was who in my opinion. But, did I still love it overall? Yes. Did I guess who was guilty? Yes โ but only right at the very end point! So, not reallyโฆ It was very well hidden and a great twist.Despite me dropping a star (I tend to do five-star reviews) itโs still GREAT though and VERY worth a read.I want to say that even though I know the outcome of the book, I am pleased that itโs being made into a TV show, although the unique aspect and presentation of the book will then be lost, potentially. So, if you haven't read this yet, you should!

An interesting concept but entirely unbelievable
The format of the book is unusual and I thought initially it would be hard to follow, which was not the case. I enjoyed it until about 2/3 of the way through, prepared to accept a certain level of far fetched-ness, but then it spiralled slightly out of control and it became ridiculously unrealistic in terms of the involvement of the characters. The big reveal of the murderer was also no big surprise. I wouldnโt recommend it particularly although it was entertaining so have given it a generous 3 stars

Excellent
I wasnโt sure whether Iโd like the format that this book was written, it was like watching a television series in a book but I really enjoyed it. Another excellent book from Cara Hunter.

Loved every bit, until the endingโฆ
I loved the book until the ending. The ending seemed forced, an unsatisfying explanation in order to force a twist into the story. However I loved the format of this book. Totally unique and I wish more crime books were written like this. But I also wish that crime/thriller authors stopped trying to put twist after twist in every story, it ends up being forced and not enjoyable. A traditional and satisfying ending is all that is needed sometimes.

Brilliant I loved it ๐คฉ
So I did a buddy read withWe read this over 4 days with a few of my instagram friends, we were all very excited to read this. I really enjoyed the group chat, there were lots of theories bouncing around between us.The plot was very interesting. I loved the format, it felt like I was watching a tv show, itโs written in the form of interviews, transcripts, news articles, text messages, voicemails, emails ect. The characters are various experts in different fields, making and airing a true crime documentary of a fictional unsolved murder from 20 years ago. I was fully engaged and invested throughout, it definitely kept me on my toes. This was very twisty, my thoughts were constantly changing, the characters were all unlikable and extremely unreliable, I trusted none of them, they all had their own set of ulterior motives, which made for a very unpredictable read. I particularly loved the last two episodes, it all kicked off, with a shocking revelation that I didnโt predict. My mind was blown ๐คฏI absolutely loved this book, I would definitely recommend it and I seriously hope it gets made into a tv series, I would watch it.๐คฉ

Murder in the Family - a rollercoaster of a ride in the reader's world
I loved reading "Murder in the Family" by Cara Hunter for several reasons. One because it was a story laid out in a different format than what we, as readers, are used to normally. The plot unfolded in a series of filming episodes that Nick (the producer) who is one of the characters in the book, set up so as to allow a group of experts to work out a cold case concerning a murder that happened in Guy Howard's childhood. Guy Howard was the director of the so-called film series entitled, "Showrunner," who volunteered to have his family life put under the microscope for close examination of possible witnesses, suspects, etc. that this group of experts could find and interview. My second reason for liking this book concerned the clashing personalities of the expert professionals who were hired to work out the case (one a lawyer, one a journalist, one a detective, etc.) and how the author conveyed their opinions/perspectives concerning the crime at hand to the reader while touching upon the themes of honesty, professional and personal integrity, faithfulness, and the boundaries of when to intervene when a life is at stake. The characters' interactions played out nicely in the story particularly since each person had their own connection to the case and the clashes between them were conveyed with realistic potency. I felt like I was in the story with these characters and not just reading it which made the book a hit for me. I was thoroughly gripped right to the very end.In conclusion, for me and I think for other readers as well, there was always the question arising, "okay, what next..." and "okay, where is this character leading me..." leaving us on the edge of our seats in anticipation of the evolving storyline. I cannot say how immensely enjoyable it was to find out who killed Luke Ryder which only came to light through the different twists and turns of the novel.Thank you, Cara Hunter, for this wonderful book, and I hope to read more of your novels in the future.
