fantastic budget tent, not lightweight though.
First off, I have to mention Hyke and Byke's commitment to fighting poverty with microloans through their partnership with Kiva. This is a very noble cause, and I have the utmost respect for the company regardless of the quality of their products. Now on to the review! (With a bit of back story) I purchased the Zion 2p as a replacement for my REI Quarter Dome 2p, as the shock cord in the poles of the QD2 COMPLETELY failed after maybe two dozen nights out. Not only did REI not respect their supposedly world class warranty, they straight up told me that they don't do repairs and to send my poles to a third party to replace the shock cord. F that! Bad move, REI. I lost a ton of respect. I'll just buy about 40 feet of shock cord and fix the poles myself. So the Zion 2p arrived, and I took it to Lake Mead on Memorial Day weekend for an initial shakedown. One night pitched on the beach in the sand. It was easy as pie to set up, and I love the fact that the tent is essentially a knockoff of the MSR Hubba Hubba NX, which is a fantastic design.Everyone that has spent a single night in a tent knows that the "persons rating" in tents is a load of crap. A 1p tent is basically a fabric coffin. A 2p tent is a one person tent with a bit of room to stretch out. A 3p is good for two people. Etc. Not this tent! The Zion 2p is a TRUE two person tent! Glory! It's darn near as big as my Marmot Ajax 3p. IIRC, the floor dimensions are 80" X 55". For a single camper, this space is absolutely palatial. It's so big, that when I was lying down, the INCLUDED gear loft (which is an upcharge upgrade option on virtually every "big name" tent manufacturer) seemed like it was at the other end by my feet. Except the gear loft is in the middle of the tent. Did I mention that this tent is BIG?So I just got back from a 2,000 mile car camping vacation in Utah and Arizona. It was EPIC! My Brother and I rented a Toyota 4Runner. We went 4-wheeling at Moab. We went off-road in the Kaibab National Forest in AZ. We camped at 8800 feet at Oowah in the Manti De La Sal Mountains, South of Moab, UT, we visited the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We camped outside of Duck Creek, UT at 8400 feet, and the temperature dropped to 30°. There was literally ice on Duck Creek in the morning. Don't tell Budget Car Rental that we went off road in their car! LolThis tent exceeded ALL expectations. It's NOT light. Sure, compared to a 15lb canvas Coleman tent from the 1970s it weighs less, but this is NOT a backpacking tent unless you divvy up the weight between two hikers. All that being said, this is an absolutely fabulous tent.Okay, a little bad. I really like the stake pusher disc. It's a great idea. The problem is that the stake pusher disc doesn't really work in the dry, hard, rocky soil of AZ and UT. It's probably great in the thick loam of the Midwest. So I had to get a "whacker" branch of a tree to drive the stakes in. Needless to say, I broke the top off of three of the stakes, and bent the shit out of a fourth stake. Thank goodness the tent came with 12 stakes! I'm not even saying that the stakes suck. They don't. They're just designed for more compliant terrain. Is it lightweight? It weighs 6lbs. It's NOT lightweight. However, it comes with a footprint and a gear loft, which are big money options if you're buying the Big Name Brands. It's sturdy af. It held up to 40mph winds no problem. Would I recommend it for backpacking? Not unless you have a partner to divvy up the weight. Would I recommend it for car camping? 100% absolutely! This is a GREAT tent!

Great for the Casual Camper
FWIW, I am not a backpacking expert, and I won't claim to be. I want to be, but I don't have the time or energy. I bought this tent because it was fairly inexpensive and had fantastic reviews. Was I disappointed? Absolutely not. For the casual camper (those of us who say we're going to go backpacking, buy a few pieces of equipment and then end up just camping in the yard a few times with our kids or significant others), this tent is perfect. From the first time I put it up in my basement, to the other day when I spent the night outside with my son, it has lived up to the expectations that preceded it. For the casual camper, weight isn't a huge deal, I could take or leave a couple pounds and could more than make up for that with a better sleeping bag. Even still, this tent actually packs down pretty small and breaks apart into several different bags for easy storage in a backpack. The material is good and I haven't noticed any flaws in the build quality. Obviously sleeping outside has it's limitations and regardless of how thick the bottom floor is, I think there is still condensation that will slip through, regardless, I have had tents where I have woken up soaking wet and this tent did not have those issues. From the moment of putting the tent up, I was impressed by how easily it went up. It's not super fast (I'm sure it could be) but it's easy, no fumbling to feed tent poles through a sleeve, just extend the single pole and then clip the tent on. The rainfly also goes on extremely easily and covers the tent nicely. My last backyard adventure did see a large amount of rain and I never even noticed it inside the tent. Even the area between the rainfly and the bug net stayed dry overnight where I left my shoes. In the morning, I didn't have to rush to put the tent away but one of the best parts about this tent is that it folds up to the original size without any expletives. I have had tents that would never go back into their original bag and this one seems to pack smaller each time I use it. Tent poles are good quality, although they pick up a fair amount of dirt. The little circle tent pusher is a handsaver and that little piece is a pleasant bonus in the package. The single tent pole design breaks down easily and seems sturdy and well built unlike fiberglass poles (which may be a bit outdated by now).Overall, I am sure there are much better tents out there, however, for the price point, if you aren't worried about the extra weight, or maybe you aren't planning on using very often and don't want to spend the extra money, this tent is a great buy. It sounds like the company stands behind their product, although I doubt I will have to test that theory. I am overall thoroughly impressed and happy with my purchase.
