My favorite aviators
I've tried Ray Bans and Randolph's aviator glasses but AO ended up being my favorite mainly for comfort and price. Ray Bans always felt short along my temple and slid down my nose. Randolph's felt better but I couldn't tell much of a difference in quality between those and AO. There were some slight differences in design like the skewness of the lens and lens variety but I didn't find those options worth spending extra for. I definitely love the bayonet temples, they fit much more comfortably and are much easier to wear when wearing a helmet or hat.

Not worth it!
I keep giving American Optical another chance and every time they disappoint. The first time I bought a pair of American optical was 20 years ago and the gold frame started tarnishing under the bayonet temples. The “lifetime warranty” only covers solder points so when I tried to get them fixed they said tough luck. Back than it wasn't a life time warranty, i think it was a year and good luck trying to get a live person. Despite admitting that it is the fault of their plating which caused the corrosion when it came in contact with body oils and sweat. They were $60 at the time and I got a few years use out of them so I figure no harm no fowl.Incidentally the other company, Randolph Engineering, also American made and similar aviators use to be significantly more expensive so AO was more attractive in price. Come to this pair and the price difference is much smaller at $214. Similar non polarized frames are $249 with RE.I decided to give American another try because Randolph didn’t have the gold flash and I really like this look. Unfortunately the gold flash is more a rose gold in person, while nice, it’s not to my taste.I never had a problem with the fit of American optical. I’ve always worn the middle 55inch size. The 57 makes my eyes look like a but and the 52 are too tight. This pair is both tight in the temples and the nose pieces push into my nose in a very uncomfortable way. After wearing for an hour or two they leave pinch marks. As others have mentioned the glasses don’t sit straight. They have this tilt that leaves a bigger gap on the top bring it closer to your face on the bottom. It makes it feel like they are going to fall off and leaves more light in from the top. It’s really quite disappointing. My Randolph glasses fit perfectly. The lenses are always the exact colors that’s shown on their ads and when I sent them in for a tune up. They inspected everything and replaced the bayonet temples and nose pads. I got them back look brand spanking new. AO has nothing like this. They over promise and under deliver and it’s murder trying to get customer service. My advice: pay the extra and get the nicer Randolph engineering and let this brand die.

FINALLY! A pair of aviators that look good on more face shapes! Made in USA!
I love sunglasses. If you live in the Southwest, you really can't survive without them and good ones are absolutely essential- dark, polarized. I love aviator styles but the traditional oval shape looks terrible on my face shape.Admittedly, I had never heard of American Optical but seeing the shape of these, the sizing which I estimated was about perfect for me, and doing research on the brand itself, I was super excited to try these. These are gorgeous glasses, through and through. The mirror is beautiful and crisp and they feel secure on your head, unlike many aviator styles I have tried. They come in a beautiful leather case with a microfiber cleaning cloth that just exudes old school cool and quality (I mean, aviators are a classic for a reason!). The shape is very flattering for a lot of face shapes. These look great if your face is more rounded or oval shaped. The best part about these is they are not mass produced by some major sunglass house (such as Luxottica which makes many of the higher end sunglasses like Revo). These are made in the good ol' US of A which I think is so cool and something I enthusiastically support. I do wish this was more prevalent as I do try to seek out this information and it was difficult to find (and when the manufacturing country is hard to find, I just assume it's China). The quality in these is absolutely apparent and they're definitely one of my favorite pairs now. The branding is very understated if that's your thing- there is only a very small "AO" on the arm. I'm very happy with these, they look great and they actually stay on your head. They are much more snug than most wire frame style glasses so they will feel different at first. Even though they're snug, I don't have any issues wearing them all day.
