Will this work on the D3200? Is it a better battery?

Yes it is a better battery and it's compatible. This is taken from the Nikon website:* The EN-EL14a rechargeable Li-ion battery can be used in place of the EN-EL14 rechargeable Li-ion battery.* The EN-EL14a battery life has been improved by up to 20% compared to an EN-EL14 battery (depending on the camera model and shooting conditions). Both batteries can be charged using the MH-24 battery charger.* All cameras that currently use the EN-EL14 can also be used with the EN-EL14a. See the following for further information regarding EN-EL14a compatibility with each camera.* D5200, D5100, D3200, D3100, COOLPIX P7700- By upgrading firmware, EN-EL14a performance is maximized and more images can be captured (battery performance) when an EN-EL14a is used than when an EN-EL14 is used.

If it's an oem part, why do i need to do a firmware update on my d5100?

You can use the battery as is , but with the new firmware you get longer life.

Does this battery fit D5600

The EN-EL14a is the compatible battery for the D5600.

I don't own a D5200 but if your current battery has the same number minus the "a" it should be okay as this is either the dedicated battery for the Nikon or the replacement for the EN-EL14. Can't recall which seller I bought mine from but it was an authentic battery and has performed as well as the original.
