Cat5e cable is specified for 1Gb/sec upto 100m runs as long as the cable is not crushed, kinked or otherwise forced in a tight radius and also not run past sources of EMI. Any higher category cable is a waste of money and unlikely to remedy attenuation due to the aforementioned causes. Cat6 and Cat6a are for 10Gb/sec connections or 1Gb/sec in EM-hostile environments. Officially, Cat7 and Cat7a are not yet ratified standards so the designations are spuriousIf your question refers to the connection between the switch and a router for example, remember that all ports operate up to 1Gb/sec. This is shared by all packets in that stream. If you had 7 PCs trying equally to access a NAS connected to the 8th port then the NAS would deliver data at 1Gb/sec and the PCs would then get 1/7th of that on their respective ports.
