Should a wood buring firepit have a sand or gravel base?

I Don't think that would work very well. You have to clean out all the ashes with a shovel every so often and you would be shoveling out your gravel too. I put concrete patio blocks down before I built my fire pit; but you can just build it on the earth if you want.

My firepit has a 34" inside diameter. Will the 38" ring fit?

Yes it should fit. The lip is about 3" so the inside sleeve of the ring of the 38" should be about 32".

What is the od of the inner ring? my pit has an id of 32 1/4"

Mine still has winter covering on it; but I believe that the 36" is the inner ID. I think if you check FAQ you might find the answer; or check the sellers description closer.

How tall is the 38" model?
