Does it work pretty well just standing on the ground or are you supposed to mount it on a wall?

The small metal stakes they give you combined with the small holes pretty much make anchoring the unit into the ground a joke. The wall or drilled out to larger holes and bolted/epoxied to a heavy masonry paver is the best.

If it is the hose fitting, Teflon tape is not going to do anything to help seal the hose to the fitting. That is the job of the washer in the female hose fitting. It seals the inside edges of the female side to the Leading Edge of the male side. The threaded swivel of the hose fitting (turny thingy) does not provide a seal. It only serves to pull the two ends together against the rubber washer tightly. Same goes for many other fitting types that unknowledgeable people will advise you to put tape or thread sealant on. ONLY tapered threads benefit from Teflon tape.

How would this work free-standing if you put a 45# barbell plate on the flat base part? Will that keep it from moving around?

I used one of those flat hoses on mine to help solve this problem. The unit is still too top-heavy for the base if not bolted down, but it helps immensely

The crank hits the legs. Is this normal or is mine defective?

You may need to do a little re bending. I did and fine after that. It's poor packing from the factory.
