Superstars Of 70's Soul

I like this d v d because, it has real music on it that make since. I could listen to it all day long.

Once again, another enjoyable concert from PBS. This event took place in November 2003 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Great line-up of artists with hits scanning years throughout the 70's. The Philadelphia sound is well represented here:* The Stylistics (WITHOUT the GREAT Russell Thompkins, Jr. who was replaced by the much younger Harold "Eban" Brown who does a stand-out job and sounds incredibly identical).* The Chi-Lites (WITH Eugene Record who died on July 22, 2005 after a battle with cancer).* Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes (WITHOUT of course, the GREAT Teddy Pendergrass on lead).My personal highlight was a wonderful performance by George McRae (flying in from Amsterdam for the concert) singing his classic "Rock Your Baby". He doesn't disappoint. British Soul artist Maxine Nightingale is in top form singing "Right Back Where We Started From".The others do a stand-out job and are very enthusiastic in their performances. I got this for my husband and he absolutely LOVES it! He's not one to sit and watch anything that isn't sports, but when I was out of town one night, he told me that after dinner he put it on and really enjoyed watching it. I noticed it's not in the cabinet, but by the TV for the next time he watches it.

I was not disappointed very good dvd. I love the music I think this a great dvd a 5 stare plus. It really brings back when music really had soul.

My favorite performance was by The Chi-Lites with the one time reunion of their original lead singer, Eugene Record. 2 years before his death and already looking a bit frail, Eugene suprised me with his potent and clear voice. He really impressed me. God bless his soul. I also loved Bloodstone with " Natural High ". Their original falsetto lead singer sounded sweet & clear just like in 1973. Heatwave also sounded very, very good. The rest of the performers like Patti LaBelle, The Emotions The Manhattans, etc.. sounded pretty good. Me being a Stylistics fan from the beginning, I missed their original singer, Russell Thompkins jr.. It just wasn't the same without him. While their new falsetto lead singer might have a bit more range, he just doesn't have the " Style " of Russell Thompkins jr.. He ( Russell ) will always be Mr. Stylistics.

Yes this is another of those great PBS specials.Great to have this once in a lifetime concert on DVD.I believe there is a part two or another installment pending,I for one can't wait!All soul fans and lovers of real music should purchase this.A few weeks ago this was changing hands for three times the price.Buy it now before it disappears and becomes a collectable item!God Bless PBS,Keep up these quality shows.If only the BBC and other stations could put together such shows.Highlights for me are Chi-Lites Feat Eugene Record,Manhattans,Bloodstone,Commodores McFadden & Whitehead,Geoge McCrae and Tavares.How do you top these acts? With the loss of so many soul artists this year these shows are an important lasting legacy.

Great item for my classroom usage.

I grew up during the 70's. When music brought you joy and you just wanted to dance. There wasn't any negative vibes in the music. If I could go back to any time period it would definitely be the 70's. A time when bands played their own music. They sang their songs. They didn't do so much dancing that they were out of breath and couldn't sing. They grooved and they still entertained you. We know the music was amazing. That's why the artist of today do a lot of sampling. So this dvd allowed me to remember and enjoy it to the fullest.
