I smile every time I see this pack!
Well made at a bargain price. Once the smell mellows out, what's not to like? This is a sturdy, roomy leather pack for less money than a lot of boring nylon packs. This has a classic and classy look to it with its rich, variegated shades of brown. After breaking it in for a month or so, it is as comfortable as a perfectly aged baseball glove. The only down side, (aside from the smell) is the lack of multiple outside pockets. I can make do with the one fairly roomy pocket, especially since there are two divided internal pockets, making four total on the inside. One pocket on each side is padded, making room for separate laptop *and* tablet space.About the smell- I put it out in the mud room for a few days so the smell could dissipate. Some people I talked to liked the smell, others didn't. Since the pack was wrapped tightly in shrink wrap at the factory, The smell from manufacturing it were trapped inside, with no chance to escape until I opened the packaging in my living room. Boy, did it ever escape there. After a week, the smell was a much more pleasant "new leather" instead of industrial scent.I'm overall very pleased with this pack. Two thumbs up from this reviewer!

Gorgeous leather, smells lovely, real buckles
I purchased this gorgeous, rustic, vintage-looking leather rucksack as a 'go bag' in the event of an emergency where I need to flee. It actually fit everything that I wanted it to hold! This includes all of our legal paperwork (a ridiculous amount of folders), a change of clothes for me (including, but not limited to, a wool sweater and jeans), sundry food items, a small camping-type ss pot, a First Aid kit, a small Bible, paracord, an emergency 'hurricane' radio, etc. I am incredibly impressed that, although I have this pack stuffed to its proverbial gills, it shows no signs of complaining. I just wish that there were two side pockets so that I could keep a few things (like my extra pair of glasses) more easily accessible on the road. All things considered, however this is a great bag, and I highly recommend it.**Note: My husband, when I said I wanted to add leather conditioner to the bag, said that if it is indeed new, I should wait about a year to allow the tanning process to finish. I know nothing about such things so I will simply take his word for it. I think the bag is fairly waterproof 'as is' although certainly hope never to have to submerge it (like, while crossing a deep river) to find out.

Simply BEAUTIFUL + 2 month update
Wow wow wow!! This bag is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Exactly as advertised. Super duper stiff on arrival and makes for arduous rolling and buckling, but it will soften up really fast as these kinds of bags do. Strong smell on arrival but its now day 3 and I dont smell it at all, not that it bothered me to begin with. I finally wore it today and appreciated the large padded straps, which themselves are actually soft and comfortable and makes the bag feel like air on your back. The brown canvas lining inside the bag is slightly rough on the back of my hand when I try to fish something deep inside. When the bag is open, it is super deep. Overall, I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BAG!2 MONTH UPDATE: Have had this bag for two months now and travelled to Africa and the Caribbean with it. I **CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH** how amazing this bag is for travelling. Surprisingly, because of its roll top design, the bag is super secure and keeps things safe. It has softened up considerably now and has darkened a bit. My mom says that now I look like a true seasoned traveller when i wear it ;) A day does not pass without someone complimenting the bag. People simply love it on me! They think its a super expensive bag and THEY point out to ME that this bag will outlive me. And they are right! The bag is so sturdy and well made. It has so far withstood some rough treatment in my travels and i am now thoroughly convinced that bag will truly outlive me!! The flexible extra inches of the roll top was something that made me get the bag originally and it was a good calculation and bet. I did end up needing those flex inches at various points during my travels. Again, the design is super secure and short of someone literally taking the bag off your back, its a total deterrant to pick pockets. The truth is, the bag takes a little time to unstrap and get into and when its strapped up and closed... its strapped up and closed. This was also a calculation and bet that I took into consideration to purchase this bag for travelling and it proved to be all and more. Again, the padded straps helping to offset perception of weight when the bag is full and indeed heavy, has not gone unnoticed. I actually use the front pocket to keep my cell phone, and again, because of the buckle, it is not the quicket to access, therefore its secure and a deterrant to pick pockets. Money well spent. 10 stars. Thank you!

OK - the smell is a little overwhelming...
Hence only 4 stars - and the reason this roll-top leather backpack is open and airing out in the garage! I assume the tanning process is the cause of the intense smell, and I admit I haven't smelled leather quite like this before. Nevertheless, this initial reviewe (up for modification in future as necessary) will say that it appears to be quite heavy-duty, and weighs a little more than I anticipated. I got the XL, which is the size I intended, and quite right for use as a computer bag for my 17" laptop. The seams appear to be well done, and in alignment, and the buckles are of solid quality. I wish the lining was a little softer, but I can modify that with my usual compartmentalization (individual pack organization within the main pack). Those of you who warned about the smell, thank you and I appreciate the heads-up! We will see (and hopefully NOT smell) what happens! More to come...Update. It’s been over a month and the smell is still pretty strong. I purchased a leather soap and conditioner and was told this would mitigate the smell. We’ll see. More to come…
