would a 50inch tv look odd on this?

Ours is 48 in diagonally and it fits well, 50 inch might be borderline, I could send a pic(not sure how)

What is the gap from floor to base of unit please as I have a silly ledge that’s 12cm high and need a tv unit that can sit above it thanks for helping

The gap from floor to base is 14 .5 cm however you could leave the legs off

I saw in the reviews that an electrical drill and screwdriver are needed. Can assemble without them?

I used a manual screwdriver and it worked just fine, arm was a bit tired, but no boards split on me. Also need a hammer to tap in the nails to secure the back. An alan key was supplied.
