what size is an 8 in women's? small or medium?

I bought small for my daughter who wears a size 8 shoe. They are very stretchy. I bought a pair for myself in small and I wear a 5.5 shoe. I wanted more material in my shoe to snug them up. She wears hers in hiking boots. We both love them.
