This allows Apple car play and Android Auto on your Android head unit
I'm using this on an Atoto A6 Pro head unit. The dongle didn't come with any instructions, but it's pretty straight forward. You need a compatible head unit, the Autokit app installed on the head unit, and Android Auto app installed on your phone, or if using this with Apple you need at least an Iphone 5 with siri turned on.The Atoto dongle should work on most Android head units with usb ports. I know it will work with the Atoto's and the latest Atoto firmware (9.4.3) comes with the Autokit app preinstalled. If you don't have an Atoto head unit I can't guarantee it will work, but I also see no reason it won't work on other Androids. The app (Autokit) can be downloaded and installed by contacting Atoto support. The app can also be downloaded from their website, but it's difficult to find. They really should include the link to download the app in the packaging sent with the dongle, but support is quick to reply in any case.Once you have Autokit and Android auto installed. Just plug the dongle into the USB of the head unit (make sure you aren't using the fast charging port or it's turned off), open the Autokit app and plug your phone in. With my phone an Essential PH-1 running android 9, I had to swipe down, select usb Preferences and select the option for USB tethering before it would connect. This step may not be needed with your phone. I haven't tried the Apple Car Play yet, I'll test that soon, and update this review after.Operation: I tested Navigation (Waze), Music (Google Play Music), Voice, and texting. Everything worked flawless and they switch between each other quickly, you can also switch out of the app and use the Android head unit and it's apps, it will continue to play music in the background and save your Navigation. Basically it will continue to run in the background even if you switch to the normal head unit apps such as Torque.I haven't tested if it will continue to give turn by turn directions out loud if you switch away, I'll test that later. It will also not alert you of a text if you're switched out of the app unfortunately, you have to switch back to the app and it will show you have a text waiting, you click it and the voice will tell you have messages from XYZ then read them out loud, it then asks you if you want to reply. Depending on your answer it will either let you reply via voice or continue doing whatever you had it doing. (playing music for instance) The mic always understood what I was saying, and confirmed what I said before sending.Android auto isn't as full featured as having Android as the operating system, however it does have its perks. The voice messaging for one is nice, it's also nice to enter directions on your phone and then use the Android Auto app for navigation, it's just not that easy to type on a double din radio, not to mention most the time I get my directions from someone that texted them to me. You can also let friends play their music easily from their accounts by just plugging their phones in. No bluetooth pairing necessary. It does all the basics: phone calls, music (pandora spotify etc), Navigation and voice texting.I found that the phone stays about the same percentage while using features of Android Auto, it doesn't really charge up while using it. Your mileage may vary, but I wouldn't count on using it when your phone battery is low, unless you don't care if the battery stays low. That will do it for this review, I'll update it as I play with it more and try Apple Car PLay.Update Sept 22, 2018Well I've continued to use this dongle over the last week, I still haven't used Apple car play I still plan to but I thought I would update this review. Turn by turn navigation does continue in the background if you use the normal head unit apps. My phone charged 1% in 15 minutes while streaming music over Android Auto, not the fastest but better than no charge. The simplicity of Android auto is nice. I'll update again after using Apple car play.

Bummed Dongle?
I think I just lucky and got a bummed dongle. No matter what usb cord i used or where i plugged it in, it would not recognize. I'm using the atoto a6 head unit with a S9+ android phone. Software is updated on both. I contacted customer support through their website, hopefully I can change my review in the future. Hopefully itll take less than two weeks to get here, but doubt it with holidays coming up plus virus. One other thing, my dongle has a Jack insert next to the female usb slot, which isn't in the picture. That probably doesnt matter, no idea what it's for, but thought I'd mention it.

Great Adapter! CarPlay works great!
I added this to a Atoto A6 Standard. Works pretty much as advertised and I really like it. Without this, the A6 is too unpolished and requires too much interaction with the head unit when you are driving. This device really does make it a slick deal. I also bought the remote control device that straps to the steering wheel. On the plain A6, the pause/play and mute buttons did not work, but with this CarPlay adapter they do! Bonus! Now if only the microphone button on the remote would activate Siri instead of google on the main A6 interface. The only real disappointment was the need to still connect with the head unit bluetooth1 connection with the phone. It appears to work without it, but when phone calls are made, the remote end hears major echo. This goes away when Bluetooth is connected. The iPhone must be doing the echo cancellation at that point. Interestingly enough, the call has a better tone without the Bluetooth connection, but of course the echo. The call has a tinnier sound when done over the Bluetooth connection. It is useable, but could be better. As I mentioned, I bought the Standard A6 to use with this adapter and it has plenty of RAM to run the adapter. Actually the screen is a bit snappier running the CarPlay than the standard Linux interface.Giving it 4 stars because of the lack of documentation and tinny call audio quality.
