Should I order one size up to wear over a couple of layers? Or do these run large enough to afford the extra room?

It is a pretty cool vest. I wear a medium in USA size. I tried to order this in 2X, but they were out. I ordered XL. Fits little short. I am 5'-5" tall and 165 lbs. 42" chest. XL barely covers my belt & won't zip comfortably. I wear a shoulder holster. It is a good vest to wear open.

Is that zipper on the back a big pocket? and what material is it? Thanks!
