Concise biography, good descriptions of the techniques and materials he used at various periods, decent explanation of his evolution through different periods with European and American influences, and superb graphics of his major works in different periods. Made me wish I had met and known Leigh and Jackson as neighbors, or as friends..

Jackson Pollock Review
This is a rehash of much of the same. The color of the images leaves something to be desired and at times, is way off. For an inexpensive book, it's easy reading and gives a few more insights into the life of this very imaginative painter.

Overall view of an intense man
Jackson Pollock will be forever known for his technique of drip painting. He is iconic with paintings such as, One: Number 31, 1950 or Autumn Rhythm: Number 30, 1950. But this book shows much more of an abstract painter. Pollock studied under Thomas Hart Benton, a sort of Western Norman Rockwell painter. One of his earliest paintings, Going West, reflects Benton’s influence. Leonard Emmerling shows Pollock’s major body of work and influences in this book. There is nothing in depth about Pollock, but this is great book to get an overall view of his life and work. There is a Chronology of Pollock at the end of the book giving a history of the man. The photographs by Bernard Schardt and Hans Namuth contribute more to the image of the intense painter at work. Presented by Taschen in a large format, the paintings are easier to analyze and view. Overall, good starting point to look at Jackson Pollock and his major works.

#5 has his name in it
One point that was missed is that Pollock hid his name in his art. Mural spells out Jackson Pollock and #5 shows "Jackson" in yellow/white if you trun it 90 degree's left.

A nice introduction.
This book is serviceable. It's much smaller and easier to store that that big giant monograph with all the pull out drip canvas repros. This one covers a lot of his earlier career too, which is actually better than those drip fiascoes. Those are fun, and he turned them into "happenings" to justify the seeming lack of any real deliberation--with his liquor bottle imprints and cigarette butts--but he did have mad skills going for him before all that meandering.
