Is this an induction plate or can ceramic dishes also be kept warm on it ?

Yes, once the Caterlite Warming Tray has heated up, you can place ceramic dishes straight from the oven onto it, to keep warm. I also place cooked and drained veges, still in their cooking pots, onto the Warming Tray. Again wait until the Warming Tray has heated up, before putting hot pots or dishes onto it... I could not be without this appliance!

Does this have to be plugged in to the mains, or are you able to charge the item to leave in a table top?

It needs to be plugged in to stay warm - With a handy adjustable temperature setting, you can keep food at precisely the right temperature.

Does this heat via thermal conduction or does it depend on induction (and hence only metal objects can be heated) ?

It is thermally operated and is not an induction product.
