I read a lot. This book is not written well.
I waited anxiously for this forth book. I can't believe the reviews I'm reading. The first 200 pages were so boring. I kept waiting for something to happen but it didn't. Then when it finally got interesting the murder mystery lacked any depth and the real good part about Elsies relationship ends leaving me with a feeling of anger at the author that I don't want to read any more of her books. I would not recommend this book. A good author leaves you wanting to look forward to the next book with excitement not hanging! It seems like she thinks she has to "trick us" to read her next book.

Trying to Figure out their path
Not as exciting as the previous books. The main characters are likable but they almost seem secondary to Elsie and her story is not interesting. Her story is predictable.Hopefully the next installment will see our heroes start a detective agency. Their really isn't any detection going on here

Amazing! Highly recommend!!! Terrific!!
The book “A Veil Removed” by Michelle Cox is real page turner. I couldn’t put it down. It’s the fourth in a series about Henrietta and the Inspector. It can be enjoyed on its own. A Veil Removed is filled with an absorbing mystery and a lovely romance. The book has accurate historical material from Chicago in the 30’s. The characters are clearly written and I feel that I know them personally.Michelle is an outstanding writer and she keeps the reader involved and waiting for the next adventure of Henrietta and the Inspector.

Boring and confusing
I think I would call the Henrietta and Inspector Howard books a serial, not a series. This isn't really a stand alone book. Missing backstories just cause confusion for the reader who has not read the previous work. The majority of the book seems to center on Elsie, who has been seduced by a scoundrel. After her aborted elopement, she is being pushed by part of her family to quickly find a husband (one suitable to her wealthy grandfather) to stop gossip about her folly. Her sister encourages her to attend college instead where she meets a German immigrant and seems to fall in love. Meanwhile, Henrietta and Inspector Howard take on a mob boss in a predictable and quite boring plot. The only characters in the book that I found (somewhat) interesting were Elsie and her German gentleman. Unfortunately, that story (remember it was a MAJOR part of the book) ended in a CLIFFHANGER!! I will not read this author again.

Review of A VEIL REMOVED
A VEIL REMOVEDA Henrietta and Inspector Howard NovelReview by Author Roy MurryHenrietta and Howard return from their honeymoon because of the death of Howard's father, the patriarch of a wealthy Clive family. No one believes his death was other than an accident."A Veil Removed' is book four in a five-novel series. Therefore, I have no idea how Henrietta and Howard meet. However, the author gives the reader hints as to the two different worlds from which they came.Elsie, Henrietta's sister, love involvements, schooling, and social life, take center stage to the mystery of Howard's father's death and the mob business that led to it. But, when H and H get down to investigating, the plot thickens. The 1930s background, and how wealthy people lived then added to the novel's distinct and colorful language brought the characters alive. Boy, life has changed since then. The writing is fashionable to the time, which gives the reader a laugh once in a while. The story, however, lacks the mystery I usually enjoy - my fault.I should have started with book one in the series. From the author's description of Henrietta and Howard in this book, I believe the mysteries they solved in the novels one through four are worthy.I will buy book one in the series, as should you.

Honeymoon cut short
In this fourth book in the series, Clive and Henrietta's honeymoon is cut short by the death of Clive's father, Alcott Howard. Clive is not ready to take over the reigns in the family business and the more he learns about his father's death, he becomes convinced that it was not an accident. Henrietta joins forces with Clive in an effort to assuage his grief and with the hope that they can form their own detective agency. Henrietta's reunion with her family is clouded by her Grandfather's insistence that her brothers be sent to a boarding school and her sister's disastrous love life. Elsie planned to elope while Henrietta was away on her honeymoon but Clive’s sister thwarts her plans.Henrietta persuades Elsie to enroll in Mundelein, an all girl’s college run by nuns, to escape the gossip and damage to her reputation. Entrance is not easy since Elsie hasn't completed the requirements for high school, but Henrietta is very persuasive. Elsie feels insecure in college until she befriends Gunther, a German custodian, who helps ease her homesickness.I love every one of the Henrietta and Inspector Howard novels, and this one is no exception. They have been compared to Downton Abbey and Miss Fisher's Mysteries rolled into one- part mystery, part romance. Cox captures the 1930s and transports us into that time period. I would not read this one as a stand alone because the story begins where the last one ended. I felt the ending was a little abrupt, however, it has promoted me to order the next one. I can't wait. If you haven't read the series, start on 1 and keep going until you have read them all.

Another gem from this author
I have now read all of this series so far and became quite obsessed with the characters. They are imperfect people with their own faults and challenges and that that makes them more interesting for me. I am so pleased there is another one on the way. I want to know what happens to Elsie & Gunther: does another impending world war affect them? Is Henrietta pregnant? Is Bennett in love with Antonia & who is Carter to her? Lots of questions so hurry with the next episode please!!

Good story
Enjoyed the story but feel that there is too much assumption that the previous books have been read first with little information how the characters intermingled.

Not worth your time
This book is a cheap effort to get readers invested in the story so they'll pay around $9CAD for the NEXT book to find out how THIS story ends. As far as I am concerned, this is a cheap trick to manipulate readers. How rude and disrespectful of the author! At least be fair with the people who gave you their hard-earned cash for your book: TELL THEM THE WHOLE STORY!This one is like reading Cinderella - only when the Prince takes her hand, you are told that to find out what happens next, you have to buy the next book in the series.A GOOD WRITER DOESN'T NEED GIMMICKS. A good writer's story is so compelling the reading wants more stories, not the end of the story told in the book they already bought - a book that left you hanging pretty much in the middle of a conversation. I will remember the name Michelle Cox as a writer whose only talent seems to be playing her readers for fools. I got stuck once, but never again.Between paragraphs strung together into one interminable paragraph, anachronisms, and a mishmash of characters, this book needs a good editor. The many, many characters are not sometimes referred to by first names and other times by surnames, which means a lot of back flipping for the first few chapters. The switches from present to memory to flashback with no warning make for for some confusion, too. I was quite surprised to see so many 5-star ratings, actually.I will not buy another of her books. For $8.69CAD, I expect a better-written product than this book. Considering the good reviews books 2 and 3 received, it begins to look as though this book was intended to be a loss leader designed to build an audience -- and therefore not written and researched with the care every book deserves, even if it is priced low to entice new readers and build a list. Some people will stoop to any level. The idea that Ms. Cox has missed is to deliver MORE than you promise so that readers are pleased and will gladly buy your book; you, however, have delivered far less and badly, at that.
