Absolutely terrible, but serves the purpose I bought it for

I purchased this Alcatel as a spare phone for festivals, or emergencies if my preferred phone isn't working. The latter happened, and with my everyday unit not working I had to use the Alcatel. My experience was absolutely terrible in using for half a day while my smartphone was being repaired, which may make my 5-star overall score seem odd, but I'll explain. The battery life was fine. That gets it brownie points. However, The touch screen response is absolutely abysmal - it would be quicker and more accurate to type on it if I just repeatedly smashed my forehead into the screen. The processor cannot handle anything except unlocking itself, and even that was hanging in the balance at times. The camera quality could probably be outdone by an old Sony CyberShot. Within about 6 hours of use, I was genuinely ready to throw this thing at the nearest lamp post, but the battery was still on 87%.However, I give this phone 5 stars because it did what I needed it to do. It makes and receives calls adequately (just). It doesn't function well enough as a smartphone to have anything much go wrong with it, and there is absolutely no glass on it to break. It won't run out of battery quickly through overuse. It also made me REALLY appreciate my high-end smartphone. If you want a backup phone terrible enough to force you to take proper care of your more expensive main phone or to give to a less tech-savvy relative / small child who will literally use the bare functions of it, this is an absolute bargain device.

Almost perfect, but falls a bit short

A lot of reviews will complain about battery life, lagging, several things, but I've suffered none of these. The speed of this thing is insane, it boots up in a few seconds and loads whatever I need just as quick. It isn't the most powerful, so certain apps will cause lag spikes, but it's good and adjustable if you add a memory card. The battery won't last forever, playing videos tends to whittle it down from 100% to 50% within three to four hours if the brightness is low and you're using headphones, but this can easily be resolved by, you know, not watching videos all day on a tiny screen. I use the hotspot commonly, which drains the battery just as fast, but you can plug it into a USB port while using it to easily prevent this. Now, here's my main problem: The screen is hyper sensitive. If you hold the phone the wrong way, have a bit of steam on it, breathe, it'll freak out. A on the keyboard will become P, 7 becomes satanic ritual passages, and if you dare use the pattern lock while holding it wrong, it'll go full Darude Sandstorm on you and have a mini-rave on screen. Okay, might be exaggerating the first two examples but you get the point. If you have chunky fingers, I'm advising maybe avoiding it cos I have to use my pinkie finger to type with and I don't even have all that big digits to start with...A good cheap-ish phone with a reasonably sized battery and good processing power for a low end smartphone, let down only by a touchscreen that's so eager to be touched that HR is filing a case against it and will need all the evidence and witness statements you can gather.

Remarkable at the price!

OK, this is not a Samsung or an iPhone - however, at less than £40 it is remarkable value and appears to be reasonably well made.It is quite small but I found using the keyboard OK after a bit of practice. It runs Android 8 "Go" edition - so it's easy to set up and use. Memory is a tad sparse but I put in a Kingston 'Canvass' 32GB microSD card (£4 on Amazon) and immediately set it as 'internal' storage. Once I signed into my Google Account, my Contacts etc were automatically imported and I could choose to select any APPs used on my Xiaomi mobile. As such, I was able to install a few APPs that I frequently use - bus times, train times, Amazon Shopping etc. All work fine.WiFi works great (2,4 MHz only) and it takes up to 2 nano SIMs (as well as the SD card). The connection is 3G which is not very quick but more than adequate for normal use - as you are unlikely to moving lots of data with this device! Battery life is not spectacular but again, adequate. Unusually these days, the battery is removable and easily replacedThe best bit is the display which, for the price, is amazingly good and very clear - much better than I expected. The cameras work and are OK for the odd 'snap'. There are a set of earphones in the box and sound is actually very good.I bought this as a spare mobile for the family. In that regard it is brilliant. It would also be great for someone looking for a simple mobile with the addition of the odd APP. Paired with a glass screen protector and a silicone case it is well protected and feels good in the hand. A GiffGaff PAYG SIM allows us to use it without the need for a contract. On the basis of the price, I have absolutely no complaints. It has it's limitations but it is so much better than any other mobile in the price band that I have tried. So, I am rather chuffed.

Cheap - for a reason - but does the required job

Bought for my daughter as a music player (she's had hand-me-down phones until now) it's basically a client for YouTube Music and has no SIM - but it can connect to her bluetooth speaker and play her favourite songs over wifi.Does everything we need it to do and for £50 it was a no-brainer.... but she'll be looking for an upgrade if she ever wants to use it for anything more!
