and it looks great right now
Just finished using this, and thinking about the review as I went along. I'm giving it 5 stars, because it worked as advertised, but I have a few caveats. First, as mentioned, I just finished using it, and it looks great right now, but if it fades immediately, I would downgrade this.As an aside, the container was smaller than I thought. It's one quart, not a gallon (and says that if you pay attention), but it covered what I needed covered.Obviously this does not replace mulch, which has many benefits, like weed control, water retention, soil cultivation. Also, you are just spraying the top side, so if you have lots of kids or animals or other things that are turning over the mulch, it will look faded quickly.I put on mulch about every other year. I order 5 yards, which seems to be enough to make about 100 wheelbarrow trips on a hot Saturday, and is a generally unpleasant job. Since I just did this last year, and have more than enough mulch down right now, but just wanted it to look better, I thought I would give this a shot.I took a rake and fist turned over the mulch for a bit, and pulled any big weeds. I hosed down areas that I didn't want to get colored, like walls, sidewalks, and plants. I used a new pump sprayer - spring for a new one and then just dedicate it to this job. You are going to be pumping gallons of dye through this thing, and it's never going to be the same, so just use it for this task. They're cheap. As a general note, you are essentially getting 32 ounces worth of dye, and should take obvious precautions, like wearing clothes that can get stains, and gloves, and keep the hose handy for any drips that you want to quickly spray. I only got one big drip on the concrete, but the hose quickly removed it. I went over everything twice, since it will absorb, and like any painting job (which this essentially is) the first coat never looks great.Good marketing that they have 'enviro' in the name, BTW, since it will feel anything but positive for the enviro as you stand in the middle of your yard and paint your mulch, but at least you can tell any noisy neighbors how the product has 'enviro' in the name. So, my mulch looks great now- it has that sharp black and green contrast between the mulch and the plants again. I also have some left over, which will come in handy to use a few days before we have a party or something. If you don't have a day and hundreds of dollars to dedicate to freshening up the mulch beds this year, but you do have an hour or so after work and $25 bucks, this is a good way to go.

Brings back that awesome fresh mulch look! (updated Colorback feedback)
I love black mulch, I think it makes the landscape pop as the color from your plants just gets framed beautifully, you just end up with such wonderful contrast when you start with black and add shades of green and bright hues from flowers to it.The downside is it has taken me years and i mean years to find a good quality black mulch (local landscape company makes it near me). They use a ton of dye in it and it holds it's color for a good time. Unfortunately as you know nothing stays beautiful forever. Sooner or later that gorgeous black turns grey and eventually the brown wood underneath start to poke though.I have actually used this colorant before. Several years ago I bought some brown and it worked really well. So knowing that the brown was a great product I went ahead and ordered black to cover up my graying mulch.Overall works fantastic, it takes a few minutes to do but the results? just like fresh mulch. I do recommend fluffing the mulch as it tends to get a hard layer on the top that way when you spray it looks nice and loose and fresh. I use a cheap sprayer that I bought here on amazon for under $15. I will point out that you should NEVER put your sprayer away without cleaning it out first. otherwise your going to be throwing your sprayer out.Cleanup is easy just warm water. As I get older I find myself not wanting to shovel mulch every year. So with this I can do it every other year and enjoy my spring just a bit more.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Recently came across a product from colorback. It was twice teh cost of this but covered 4 times teh area. Bought that trying to save money as always and was just terribly disappointed. First off the Enviro Color product is THICK it coats EVERYTHING, leaves, grass clippings pine cones whatever it paints them all and hides them. The colorback product did not do anything to leaves and barely coated mulch. In fact they state to reapply if needed, well with teh results I got with that product you would have to reapply 3-4 times to get teh coverage I get with teh Enviorcolor product. So yes it's more expensive but man does it work way better!

Dye concentrate was green even though bottle said black walnut
I have used this dye previously with very good results. Opened a brand new bottle, broke the seal and the dye concentrate is green (the color grass) -- not black. Called company, everything rolls over to voicemail. Sent a message via their website. Very disappointing. Lack of customer service is irritating. Should not go to voicemail hell when there is a problem.follow-up: contacted manufacture via their website on Friday, left a message regarding the problem. Received an e-mail saying a replacement was being shipped. The correct dye was delivered today (Wednesday). Not sure the cause of the hiccup. I like the product and it works very well. I received the correct product within 5 day -- I need to give them points for that. Changing my rating from 1 star to 4 stars.
