Does it grow in extreme heat

It would probably do better in heat as long as there is humidity. They like a lot of water. I grow them in Colorado but have to dig up the bulbs and bring them in the house at first frost.

What time of year is it preferable to plant?

Soil temp needs to be 50 degrees Fahrenheit, tropical plants like warm temps. Thrive in hot weather if adequately watered. Planted in a raised bed 2ft high I have had these be tall enough for people to stand under during a light rain. What better natural umbrella! Remember bring indoors in fall after first frost (frost not first freeze) either as a potted plant or store in cool dry location.
