Better than expected!
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this appliance. I had read the reviews - some glowing, some not so good, and some clueless (One person downgraded it because they thought it was supposed to roast beans as well as cool them. Good grief.). I use a venerable Fresh Roast SR500 for roasting. I have times and temperatures worked out for different roasts, but it’s still dependent on bean color and estimating how much more the beans will cook even on the roaster’s cooling cycle. The Jiawanshun allows me to stop the roast during the heating phase and rapidly cool the beans. I usually roast 165-180g of beans and the Jiawanshun cools this amount in about 2 minutes. The roast is pretty much stopped when I want due to the very efficient cooling. The cooler is very quiet, simple, easy to use and clean. It would take longer to cool more beans, but for my purposes the Jiawanshun is perfect. I would highly recommend it to anyone roasting batches of a half pound or less. It might work ok for up to a pound, but I have no experience with this amount.

Bean Cooling Made Easy!
I've been roasting green coffee for several years and have learned how crucial cooling the beans quickly is to prevent over roasting. I've been using a home made plenum box connected to a portable vacuum cleaner that sucked air through the beans. It was effective but large and extremely noisy to cool the beans. Thus, I started looking for a solution and came across this handy little gadget. For the price I thought I would give it a try.Bottom line, I am thoroughly impressed by how well this simple fan based system works. I simply transfer my beans from the roster to the top section, flip the switch and stir the beans and they cool to 80 degrees in about a minute. The grate holding the beans is designed to dechafe the beans as you stir and works great. I can't even hear the fan running which makes my wife very happy. The size is excellent and fits into my roasting station nicely. I roast small batches of beans (8oz), so the size works for me. I think the top section could be a bit deeper to allow for a more vigorous stir or to cool a larger batch. The only other thing that could be improved is to use stainless steel for the sections as there is a warning in the instructions to dry thoroughly after washing to prevent rust. Otherwise, this bean cooling systems is well built and works as advertised. I think it's a good value for the price and recommend this unit to any serious coffee roster. I have included pictures that illustrate the points made above.

Fantastic addiction to my coffee roasting kit
I didn't think I needed this because my home coffee bean roaster has a cooling cycle. That cooling cycle, however, takes approx. 10 minutes, during which the roast level of the beans continues to coast upwards. After over-roasting a few batches of coffee, I decided to try something different.Instead of trying to build something myself, I bought this coffee bean cooler and I couldn't be more happy with the results! 8oz of beans straight out of the roaster are cooled to ambient temperature in 3 minutes. The machine itself, despite its simplicity, is very well built. The base is made from heavy steel and the fan has a guard on each side to prevent against accidental injury, and it's so quiet that you can barely hear it running. There are two trays - the lower tray has a fine mesh screen in the base to catch chaff and keep it from getting into the motor assembly and blowing everywhere. The upper tray has a larger mesh which allows the chaff to fall through. Operation couldn't be simpler: place both trays on top of the base, turn the machine on, and empty the bean hopper into the top tray. I use a wooden spoon to stir the beans during the three minutes it takes to get them cool, but you probably could just dump them in and do nothing else. I stir the beans to help remove more chaff during the cooling cycle. The included brush makes cleaning the machine simple, and the product was packaged so well that I use the original box for storage. The only thing that would make this better would be to make the upper tray taller, which would allow for more capacity and allow me to stir a little more vigorously without having beans hop out over the sides. It isn't something that is a big issue for me as my roaster has a maximum capacity of 8oz of green coffee beans, but would make the machine a little more versatile and easier to use.Overall, this is a great purchase and I have recommended this coffee bean cooler to several friends. I couldn't be more pleased.

works great to cool coffee beans
I roast coffee beans every couple weeks. I used to cool the beans with a couple colanders in front of a fan. This device makes it much simpler and much more efficient. What would normally take about 5-7 minutes is reduced to about 3 minutes. Cooling the beans fast is important to preserve the roast quality.

Fan bangs on ground screw when loaded with hot beans.
Cools quickly and I like the double basket design, however the ground screw is too long so the fan hits it when the unit is heated up by hot beans. It could be a feature in that when the fan stops banging on the screw, that means the unit is back to room temp and your beans are cool!Rather than return it, I partially disassembled the unit and replaced the ground screw with duct tape :-p

Low airflow
Works OK but air flow is too low and cooling takes longer than I had hoped.

Works Great
This pulls the air in from the top. Stir the beans while they're cooling to help the chaff go through the top screen with larger holes, where they settle on the bottom fine-mesh screen. It works great.

Weak fan
After comparing to similar cooling fans, I found that this is by far the weakest. The capacity is measured by filling to the brim, which is not very practical as some beans will inevitably spill when stirring. The main issue was that it proved to be ineffective for cooling even small batches.
