Standard-size, 2.5"x3.5", the same as Magic and Pokemon cards.

So is it okay to own this and not the original or do I need both? Basically, does this replace the original?

This does not REPLACE the original - though it can be played as a standalone product. Each set adds more cards, and they can all be combined. I'd actually recommend the newest set - The Mercenaries as the first one you get. It's the most fun out of the box, and you can get the others as you go.

Which of these box sets are fun to use combined?

I own the Resident Evil standard deck building game, the Alliance Expansion, the Nightmare Edition Expansion, and the Outbreak Expansion, and I enjoy combining cards from each to both up the challenge and the fun.

Is it possible to play by yourself?

could be, there's a quick game play for 2 players but you can make it as a stand alone, but its not as funny as playing with your friends
