Would this damage aluminum rims?

The "paw' that contacts the bead of the tire and the edge of the rim is rounded nicely on this bead breaker. Given the shape of it there is no way for it to dig into the edge of the rim when being used. It is a good idea however when using any tools on aluminum wheels to place a piece of rubber between the tool and the metal of the rim. I have rubber from a large tire inner tube that I use but you can also get this by cutting an old bicycle inner tube open. Cut a section out of the inner tube and then cut that section of tube open so it can be laid down one layer thick between a tool and the rim. Two layers can be used but might make it harder to hold the tools in position, this will depend on the thickness of the rubber. When using the rubber to protect the rim from the paw of the bead breaker, BE SURE that you can see where the paw is resting so that you don't wind up with it sitting atop the rim-edge as pounding into this would obviously damage the rim. This bead breaker is a great tool and value for the price. I pulled the slide (hammer) out of the tube when I got it and sprayed WD40 (can use any kind of similar lubricant spray) down into the tube, letting it run down out around the paw onto a rag. This was done to treat the oxide that had built up on the inner surfaces of the ram end of the paw and the spring inside of the tube. This will help preserve the metal but also allows the impact from the slide-hammer to transfer more completely to the paw as there is less resistance from iron oxide on the inner surfaces.
