Anyone else experience the light almost immediately dimming, even after putting new batteries in?

I did buy this exact item, and have not had that issue with it, but I can make some suggestions that will usually fix such problems in similar items: I would try those same batteries, removed from your unit, in some other piece of gear, if I possibly could to PROVE they were good.; "New" batteries aren't necessarily good. But basically, problems like you describe usually result from either dirt, oxidation, or poor contact between internal parts of the unit. First if you turn the unit on, and the LED's immediately dim, try gently pushing down on the switch actuator, and try pushing SLIGHTLY left and right, up and down on it, not enough to move it, or just enough to move it a hair either way, to see if the switch function is iffy. If the LED brightness changes as you apply forces to that switch actuator, it is likely at least part of the problem. Try cleaning the batteries and the contacts with a bit of cotton or Kleenex, and a LITTLE 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol. If the batteries or corresponding contacts inside the unit do not look shiny and clean, take a bit of RED pencil eraser (DO NOT use a white or gray ink eraser; they are too abrasive) and rub all the dull or dirty metal contacting surfaces until they look new and shiny. BLOW OUT OR OTHERWISE CLEAN AWAY THE RESULTING DEBRIS! If the unit still does not work, and it looks as if the battery contacts might be bent down too far, you can try GENTLY bending those battery contacts up slightly, to increase the contact's force against the installed batteries. BUT BE GENTLE AND CAREFUL; First, just bend the contacts ever so slightly, not even enough to change anything, until you get the feel for the MINIMUM force required to effect a slight change. Finally, if the unit still does not work, next, WITH THE BATTERIES REMOVED, you could try flooding the switch 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol, and working it, ON and OFF, a dozen or so times, AND THEN SHAKING OUT AS MUCH LIQUID AS YOU CAN, THEN LETTING THE UNIT DRY DRY UNDER A LAMP OR IN THE HOT SUN FOR A DAY OR SO. DO NOT TRY TO OPERATE THE UNIT WITH BATTERIES IN IT UNTIL IT IS DRY INSIDE. THIS IS ONE REASON YOU SHOULD USE 91% OR 99% ISOPROPYL; LESS WATER, AND THE ALCOHOL EVAPORATES MUCH FASTER than water ever will. As I say, usually, the little tricks listed will fix a problem of this type, esp if the unit is new.

how to replace the batteries?

There is a small, circular door on the bottom, with a slot for a coin. You just unscrew the door, using a coin like a screwdriver, and the batteries pop out, pretty much like what you'd find on most small items using "button cell" batteries.
