Hello, this Latch Lock is suitable for this kind of release work. But I thin You cannot find find a DIY kit , at least I couldn't. So I made simpple Arduino based timer, simpple and cheap ( I made a automatic hay distribution device for my daughter). Three shelves that were launched six times a day. Ithink She need more this kind of feedeng machines so I perhaps make at least one in near future.

can this be hooked up to a standard push button for release?

Yes You need 12v Battery for it. It takes 2amps when release

If the door is closed and the power goes out, does the lock remain locked, or does it automatically unlock?

It will stay locked…. When powered it releases and springs open, then when returned to a not powered state, you can push the mechanism back together and stays locked.
