Does it stretch a bit?

Yes--a bit. I have a large head size (7-1/2), and it was too small for me, but my husband was able to stretch it to wear. His head is only slightly smaller than mine.

is it too big for a 5 year old?

We got this for our 3 yr old as part of a Halloween costume. It’s morphed into his favorite winter hat (he’s now 4). We have large heads 😬 but I think a 5 year old would be ok 👌
