Does it need external power of i want to use it with a laptop?

You can connect our monitor to your laptop with only one USB-C cable if you laptop has full-featured USB-C port and please check your laptop can provide enough power(20w+ is requested）. It may need your laptop is in a high-performance mode when you just use one USB-C cable for connecting. We recommend that connect the monitor to the adapter while using our monitor because some laptops or desktops or other devices can't provide enough power(20w+ is requested）.

how do i adjust the brightness? the button brings up the box to which it says it is set to 0 (true as it is dim) but i cannot adjust it up or down?

If the monitor is facing you in landscape mode, with the "Magicraven" logo at the bottom, the button you press on the left hand side is the second up from the bottom. That enters brightness mode. Once in brightness mode use the third button from the bottom to increase brightness, and the second button to decrease brightness. Similar routine for changing the volume. 3rd button from the bottom enters volume mode, second and third buttons are the -/+ for the volume.
