Julie Walters is a splendid choice to present a travel documentary, with her down to earth, friendly personality and droll sense of humour. She makes real connections with the people she meets on her travels, which infuses the programme with warmth and humour, and her genuine delight at the beauty of her surroundings is utterly infectious. Walters travels through Scotland and Wales, and North East England and Cornwall, by modern and by steam train, and stops off en-route to explore the surrounding area. If, like me, you enjoy vicarious armchair travel, this dvd of coastal rail journeys with its vibrant and engaging presenter will hold you rapt from start to finish.

Bought this for my father-in-law, for Fathers' Day, having watched it myself on TV. JW is hilarious on her journey up and down Britain's coast line. I'm not particularly a train enthusiast but JW makes it fun and interesting - lots of history and politics of the day surrounding our national railways, their decline and subsequent restorations - brilliant Channel 4.

This is a most enjoyable series. Julie Walters’ easy, laid-back style and witty sense of humour suits each programme perfectly. There are four episodes: The West Highlands; The East Coast; Devon and Cornwall and North Wales. All of them feature spectacular coastal railway views and genuinely interesting explorations into local history. If ever a programme begs to have several further series, this is it.

I suppose it’s a matter of taste. Julie Walters is a great entertainer and very popular, always good for a laugh. For my taste, I prefer something a little more substantial in this kind of programme. I enjoyed watching it through once and then gave it to the charity shop. I wouldn’t want to see it again. In my opinion, Michael Portillo did it a lot better.

It’s all fabulous, you’d have to be a boring old fart not to like!
