The sound is very faint and difficult to hear. I put in new batteries, but that didn't help. Has anyone else experienced this?

I had to return mine after a month cause it would not make any sounds at all. Changing the batteries did not help. I returned it with no problem and ordered a new one. The one I have now works very good, and my Grandson loves it. If I were you I would return it and reorder another one.

Has anyone else had a problem with pieces of plastic breaking off of this toy? I've had this toy since 2006 so maybe it's just old...

We've only had it for 6 months so no breakage has occured. It seems extremely strong and gets lots of punishment from a 6- 14 month old who is only now pushing it instead of whipping it. He loves it!

Does the tractor move itself?

No, child controls it. My grandson loves it, but he loves any tractor.
