On my model, there are two grips per side, one grip is for using the walker, the other grip when pushed down activates the brake

I am 6' and the handles reach about 36" I have no problems using it. You and your husband should have no problem with this walker

Are the wheels hard plastic or rubber ?

The wheels on this type of walker are hard rubber wheels. It is easy using this walker outside on sidewalks or parking lots. It works good on carpet as well. I have 2 of them one for inside the house and one I leave in my 4runner
