Publishing for Profit: Successful Bottom-Line Management for Book Publishers

This is the ultimate guide for small publishers.
This is the best guide on publishing that I have ever read (and I've read quite a few). The author gives a realistic view of the publishing world from large publishers all the way down to one-person shops. This book is absolutely wonderful (and necessary) for anyone who is starting or running a publishing house. Small press owners/managers will appreciate the author's knowledgeable approach to establishing a business, making contracts, developing financial statements and projections for your company, planning, hiring employees when necessary and much more. If you have not worked in the publishing industry for at least five years, then I think this book is a necessity for your business. Even if you have worked in publishing for some time, I feel you will still learn many things from this book. The value added after reading this book is more than 10 times the purchase price ... easily (and I'm not prone to exaggeration).

Not What I expected
I bought this book especially interested in the financials section, which was unfortunately very weak. There were positive parts to this book such as providing a sample of titles to create when starting your own publishing company. It was a small sample though. Also, I did like the part in which he said that every person you hire should be a sales person, although I would have liked him to elaborate more on that point. I think it would have been a bit better in going into more detail as to what the potential publisher could expect in the form of financials when starting the company, not necessarily when it comes to selling the books. That's great, but without the right financials to start with, budgeting for later cannot and will not happen. Overall, not thrilled. It was okay!

Good book, but too much information for new, independent publishers
I read this book as part of the process of starting my own publishing company. I think that if I ever expand, this book will be a great resource. As my company is so small right now, most of the information in this book was beyond what I needed.Since many of my books are digital, I did appreciate the chapter on Electronic Publishing and Marketing, but would have appreciated more details on how to market the book and turn site visitors into book buyers.

Useful
There is a lot of useful information in this book especially for entrepreneurs. It was a required book for a publishing class. I didm't need to look elsewhere when completing most class assignments. The book is one to keep for future reference.

The most valuable book for understanding the publishing industry
In my opinion this book contains all of the information one would need to start a publishing business. Every important topic is covered, including why you should define a publishing niche for your business, how to decide on your editorial process, and why returns are such a problem in publishing today. The most recent edition also includes discussion on eBooks and Print on Demand (POD).Some people might feel that this book contains too much information which is not pertinent, particularly to those who are either planning on self-publishing or who wish to start a small independent press. To those people I would say that to deviate from what is considered tradition publishing and explore new paradigms one must first understand what defines traditional publishing. One must have an understand not just of what is done, but why it is done. Publishing for Profit explains not only the mechanics of the publishing business but also the philosophy behind those mechanics. I would consider this book a must have for anyone seriously considering the publishing business.Dr. Ken TupperPublisher, Divertir Publishing[...]

A "must read" for publishers and authors
It's a marvelous resource and I'm happily and greedily roving through it to see what I should read first. It has so much of what I need to know right now. Obviously, the whole book!I'm a small publisher and I bought and used his first edition. But recently I happened to learn he had a current update...and just in time before I launch two more titles. Using it is like having your own consultant right in your office! A "must read" for beginning or experienced publishers-

An absolute must-have
This is the Bible of publishing. It's like an extensive tutorial on how to run a publishing company. The author breaks everything down for the layman, you get all the important details and after you've studied this book properly you can go on and set up your own company. There is no nonsense in this book whatsoever, the author is clearly an expert and you will have to read it more than once to make sure you follow all of his advice. Even if you're an author rather than a publisher, there is a lot of crucial info that every writer should know. This is one of those books that you absolutely can't do without.
