Easy to install and does its job.If you have a Weir door and it gets shut or the water gets low and is no longer getting into the skimmer this valve will close and the pump can then pull from the bottom drain.Properly setup it should save your pump by not having the pump continue to try and pull water from the skimmer when there is none.

I received this today and installed it without issue. The old O-ring was severely eroded and stuck in its groove; it needed a lot of coaxing with a small screwdriver to remove it, being careful obviously not to damage the seat. I coated the new O-ring with a thin coat of O-ring lube and installed--it fit exactly. I tried the diverter plate under the float valve in its open and closed position, and everything worked as expected. When open, the water is drawn both from the bottom drain and the skimmer; when closed it draws from the bottom drain only. This is used primarily when brushing the pool after a dust storm, for example.Note that this is a genuine factory part, made specifically for the Hayward 1070 Series skimmer. The build quality is fine. I have seen reviews showing the wings to be cracked, and I'm guessing but this is possibly due to trying to remove the float valve while the pump is running. The amount of suction holding the valve in place under normal operation is substantial, even more so when the diverter plate is closed. Pulling that hard on the thing is really not a good idea, so be sure the pump is off when doing so.Also, I noticed that the little float portion inside of the old valve was at least half full of water, so I'm surprised it allowed the skimmer to work at all. It had likely been in there for 15 years, though, so it's understandable.Others have asked if this is really necessary to be installed, and the answer is a resounding yes. The whole purpose of this valve is to protect the pump from running dry should the water level in the pool fall a couple of inches and starve the skimmer of water. In my pool, the water level is controlled by an autofill well, containing a $10 float. If that were to stick closed, or the backflow preventer at the house fail, especially while the occupants are away for a few days, it would mean the replacement of a very expensive pump. This device is a cheap insurance policy, IMO...

Installed in seconds and works as needed. O-ring went in with some work, but eventually went in. Not sure how to set the baffle, set to half. seems to work on my 30K gallons pool

Includes an o-ring, which I noticed my pool was missing, so that was good.

This Float Valve fit perfectly into my skimmer. The old large diameter O-Ring was pulled out of the grove in the skimmer housing (pump turned OFF), the new O-Ring was lubed with O-Ring lube and fit into the grove in the skimmer housing, about 10 inches below the water level in the skimmer. The Float Valve Assembly was dropped into the skimmer (small diameter float side up), the leaf basket was dropped into the skimmer and the pump was started. Testing: The new float valve closed to prevent pump damage when I held the wier door up, forcing the water level in the skimmer to drop. Turning the pump off, and back on, reset the float valve assembly, and water flow into the skimmer resumed. This float valve seals well enough to pump most of the water out of my 6 foot deep, in ground pool through the pool drain, with a hose connected to the pool filter. Renting a submersible pump to drain the pool is faster.

Great product, worked as designed/expected - makes the drain located at the bottom of the pool (that is plumbed to the bottom of the skimmer) work properly again, thus improving water circulation and filtering.It also serves one even more important function - if by any chance water level in the pool goes too low, it would shut off skimmer return and pull water from the bottom of the pool. This, among other things, could save a pool motor from overheating/burning out. Neat, right?But I am sure you already knew this, right? (previous owner of my recently purchased house did not).
