Amazon Basics Shelby Door Lever With Lock, Privacy, Satin Nickel

I was choosing between this product and Kwikset Lido lever door hardware. I already had 4 of the Lido levers installed on entry doors so I was inclined to continue with them. I had already ordered the Lido locks when I decided to try these so I had the opportunity to examine both side by side.I have had to replace the latch mechanism on Kwikset locks in the past due to what I consider a design flaw so I was curious how the Shelby levers were constructed. The Kwikset has obvious wear points on the mechanism. The Shelby latch has a square metal rod so I expect them to outlast me.There were two additional positives about the Shelby that are perhaps minor but I appreciate and they did weigh on my decision. The first is the locking button on the privacy lever. The locking tab you turn extends out from the Shelby handle slightly more than on the Kwikset making it modestly easier to operate. The second and more important consideration is the means to unlock a locked door from the outside. The Kwikset has a pinhole into which you stick a probe to unlock the door. The Shelby has a slot that you could insert a coin or screwdriver into that you can turn to unlock the door making it easier to open a door locked by kids or a potentially incapacitated adult in an emergency. Note: this easily defeats the security aspects of either lever but does respect privacy in most circumstances. For heightened security where needed I recommend a keyed lock or lever as you would have on an entry door.Finally, the one minor complaint and resulting 4.5 star review I have about the Shelby vs the Kwikset is that the two Shelby installation screws are visible on the locking side of the lever. Kwikset has a clever cover plate that hides the screws. I personally don’t have a concern about this as most will never notice or care. The only time you get to notice is when you contemplate life while on the potty.Last thoughts: The Shelby and Kwikset both have a solid feel but the Shelby seems to operate more smoothly than the Kwikset.A last subtlety is that the Shelby looks great as you look down on it. From across a room, however, the Shelby looks a little thin; it doesn’t feel flimsy in any way but aesthetically it could be thicker. Just a nitpick.The more I use the Shelby levers the better I like them.The Shelby will save you $8-10 each over the Kwiksets. For me, that is worth over $200. (19 levers plus tax)

This was great for 60 days then broke. It is installed in our main bathroom. The lever won’t turn anymore. It was just past the return window of 60 days. I chatted Amazon and was told they would refund minus a $3.60 restocking fee. I explained that the product shows 90 days support and they said this is the policy. They recommended I “call back” after the return to request the $3.60 fee. I explained that this is very silly from a customer’s perspective, and they should refund the entire amount at the same time. They would not budge. I have always had excellent resolution with Amazon but this has left a negative impression, especially about any “return policy” that is stated. I will now only trust the actual return window, and will not favor any “Amazon basics” products more than others, as it doesn’t seem to make a difference, and we all know they are cheap products. I'm a 70+ retired woman who has never changed a door knob before. I have successfully changed my interior and one exterior door with these very nice lever knobs. It only took a Philips screwdriver and about 10 minutes for each door. The levers are so much easier for me to operate since I have arthritis in both hands, which is the reason I decided to try this project. The bonus is how very nice the levers look compared to my 25 yr old knobs. Seem to be very good quality and workmanship.

For many years I have maintained apartments. This very often involved the installation/repair of nearly every make of door knob/lever. So I have come to appreciate quality, or the lack of it, in door hardware. When I decided to replace a bargain brand of door knob in my new apartment, I chose to try the new AmazonBasics brand. I found the quality equal to popular brands such as Kwikset and Schlage at a lower price than either.

These handles are fantastic for the money. They have every bit the feel and build quality of big box store products. I am extremely impressed with the attention to details from the extra deep screws to the extra plate styles. Amazon hit a home run with these. My only complaint is that I could not get keyed alike sets out of the entry version. I went with the Dynasty Monterey Keyed Alike Entry Hardware CP-MON-12P and it is an identical aesthetic. That said, though, I think the Amazon product is superior in build quality to the Dynasty locks. They are likely built in the same factory in the Philippines or at least source from mostly the same suppliers, but the Amazon product is just one step up. For instance, they have small lugs on the base plates that extend into the hole to add additional tension and sturdiness that the Dynasty lack. Nice job Amazon!

I ordered this yesterday to replace a faulty doorknob I bought last week for my new steel door on my storage shed. The first one (Kwikset 94002-837 Polo Keyed Entry Knob in Polished Brass) was not only unsatisfactory, it was designed poorly and had a threading defect that caused it to be unusable. It could have been easily defeated with a quick blow from a hammer or a hard twist with a channelock pliers. This product renews my faith and was delivered in a single day to solve my problem. Heavyweight, heavy duty. strong and VERY VERY easy and fast to install... took less than 5 minutes once I was started. Nicer looking too, and of course has the advantage that when I am carrying an armload I can open it with my elbow if unlocked. You should be very happy with this quality system.
