War drama is an extensively researched genre - is this one any good, somehow new? Yes!
Historic parts you can easily wikipe so I'm not going to expand on it.What I'd like to say is that the film is very very good. Although knowing the fact that Poles know cinema pretty well, have historically very good filmmakers, directors and writers, these days also great cinematographers like Idziak, Kamiński and others, I did not expect this Polish production to be so solid. I did not expect that since I heard this film had aspired to be on par with other big international productions in the genre. Is it bold for war drama filmmaker to try to mix different genres? When it comes to war as the subject I say yes, and here in this film this cross-convention is fairly rare, once for the music and couple of times for visual layer. Story line in my opinion does not count, even with its weirdest twits as a subject for genre classification though some would claim.Film stands its ground and defends high aspirations and does it firmly. This is very very solid war drama which mixes interesting yet horrific, less known facts of Warsaw Uprising together with a group's and other random individuals' lives during these terrible times. My hopes were put down before watching by some overheard, very critical (usually Poles' own) opinions about specific bits in this film and I think I understand why. I myself can confess there's one bit not to my liking, that's a bit when director allowed himself and/or others to accompany photography with music sorts that stick out from the rest and do not fit in, completely. Others for an instance will complain about the scene which I call - kiss to miss the bullets - and which I think many don't realize is phantasmagorical precisely for it's a pure fantasy with which creators try to indulge our imagination, such a fantastical digression - I bet if I did not spoil it you would be completely unprepared - I love such brain teasers, brilliant! Others won't like other bits BUT!! this goes for every film, doesn't it?For those of you who value and love real, I mean real life drama (don't say "too much" if it's real, and war absolutely is real!!!), I say you get yourself a copy. And NOT a DVD, only Bluray for the film's really good cinematography, very good special, technical effects. One or two would hesitate for there is no Hanks no Damon, nor Gibson nor Nolte nor Penn but acting counts only and always when actors "can!" act, and they do in this film.I like this piece of film making, I had been critical prior to watching, I still am but I like it, I've gotten me a copy. I wish you a good seance, make sure you are ready for it, don't take it as some family happy dinner together, be ready for some brutal, gruesome real horror of war at your window.

The best, bad, but beautiful war film about the Secomnd World War.
Its the best war film I have seen (I am a history teacher). You were very fond of the characters in the Warsaw Ghetto, from the start, and followed them through to their end in the most impressive display of warfare I have seen. We loved them and were sad t the end. recommend it to everyone. It was bbest for us because we knew the story of Warsaw in the 2 World War.

Mama Mia in Warsaw.
Having just read about the Warsaw Ghetto I couldn't believe this balloney. Thought it would be set in the Ghetto where people were starving to death etc. This lot were enjoying themselves with hardly a German in sight. No sense of where it was happening. The film is a joke but it's also disrespectful of the heroism that the resistance fighters actually showed. The music is also absurdly inappropriate. Total crap.

One of the greatest tragedies of the Second World War
The Warsaw Uprising began on 1st August 1944 and lasted for 63 days as the Polish Home Army [Armia Krajowa] fought to liberate Warsaw from Nazi occupation. Betrayed by Stalin, whose nearby forces refused to help the Poles for political reasons, and let down by the allies, the AK were finally forced to surrender on 2nd October 1944. By then, tens of thousands of people had lost their lives and the city was in ruins. However, as Alexandra Richie points out in her recent book, Warsaw 1944: Hitler, Himmler and the Crushing of a City, despite the destruction of Warsaw being one of the greatest tragedies of WWII, "after 1945, the Polish capital's terrible ordeal virtually disappeared from history". Miasto 44, one of the most expensive films ever made in Poland, is the Polish movie industry's attempt to correct that and bring the momentous events of 1944 to the attention of as wide an audience as possible. In Polish with English subtitles and with a run-time of just over two hours, this is an above average war film, grounded in fact and with plenty of action. Starring a cast of largely unknown young actors and actresses, the film tells the story of the uprising through the experiences of a group of adolescent friends. It's part love story, part coming-of-age drama and part all-action blockbuster. According to a review of the film I read in an English language newspaper in Warsaw last year, "the director of the film is heavily influenced by first-person video games" and you should perhaps bear that in mind before you buy it. However, while the CGI-heavy special effects and Matrix-style slow motion sequences aren't to my own taste [and I felt the plot contained at least one coincidence too many] I'm sure most people will, like me, still find this a very worthwhile film.Just bear in mind that because Miasto 44 is aimed at a Polish audience it presupposes the viewer has a basic knowledge of the Warsaw Uprising. As such, the narrative is loose and is based around key events which took place across the city during the fighting and may leave non-Polish viewers feeling a little baffled. This is definitely a case where a few minutes spent reading about the subject matter on the internet before you watch the film will pay dividends.
