Near drop-in replacement for Grover Sta-Tites
I bought these to replace Sta-Tites. They are an amazing tuner but I just wanted the cream plastic knob look on my acoustic and am one of those people who believe lighter tuners make a difference. These are extremely high-quality and you cannot beat the price. Golden Gate has actually made great guitar picks for many years so this is not an “Amazon” import off-brand. They were a near drop-in replacement and I was able to make the switch easily with no drilling or reaming. I say “near” because, as with the other tuners they make as a Kluson replacement, these are slightly different in size from the ones I was replacing and the screw holes were very very slightly off-center. They still worked just fine but just FYI in case this bothers you. I think it’s because, when you compare side to side, the backplate of these are just very slightly smaller and the gear is also smaller than that of the Sta-Tite. They are also more “cream” than white, as the picture shows. Finally, they were a little tight when turning, but you can loosen the button screws slightly for a looser feel. They held tune perfectly once installed. A rare combo of a great value for something without alot of options other than very expensive Waverlys.

Honestly, these are some super smooth and sturdy tuning machines
I needed a set of 3x3 tuning machines for a Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin I, which had worn out factory tuning machines. The ones that came with the guitar were your basic Kluson style vintage tuners. But when I purchased my Godin used, this guitar had seen better days. Because this guitar was styled after those big jazz boxes like the Gibson ES125, I felt it needed something classy. So I decided to get these as they appear to be a simple drop in replacement to vintage style tuners. Unfortunately, the screw holes are slightly off on these Golden Gates vs the Kluson spacing. But I lived with it, and made it work. Now, I gave these 5-stars because everything about them was beautiful. The idea they weren't drop in replacements for vintage Kluson style tuning machines is not the fault of Golden Gate. It was mine. Everything else about these was perfect. The tuning peg ferrules were a drop in fit, and I had zero tuning issues after installation. I'm probably going to purchase a second set for another restore I'm doing because these blew away my expectations for the money.

Budget price, but full performance
I recently acquired a c.1937 Slingerland Songster that came with a set of cheap 3-on-a-plate open-backed replacement tuners that someone installed on it long ago. The tuners would not hold tuning very well, were difficult to fine-tune, and some of the gears were stiff despite my attempt to disassemble, clean and lubricate them. According to info found on the web, this guitar originally had a set of open-backed Grovers with white buttons, so these Golden Gate tuners seemed like an ideal choice. Once I got them installed and re-strung the guitar, the difference was immediately apparent. Of course, the tuning was now extremely stable, but what I didn't expect was a dramatic improvement in the guitar's sustain, volume and tone, and the rattling, buzzing, and harsh overtones that it had before pretty much disappeared. It would appear that the cheap old tuners were vibrating and interfering with the guitar's natural resonances. This sweet old guitar is able to make great music again!

Better than Tanglewood Machine Heads
No. They're not Grover. Yes, much better than the Tanglewood machine heads I had on the guitar. They're way more solid, you can feel the resistence both on and off the guitar while turning them. The hole pattern was the same as the other open back machine heads I had on there. The build quality is way better. I'd definitely recommend these items for replacement. If I could review them with Grover Open Back machine heads, I would but this is the first time I've replaced machine heads.Only thing that was different was the bushing size. The old bushings from the Tanglewood machine heads fit with the new machine heads. I didn't want to make larger holes through the headstock. It worked well!

Excellent upgrade for my Ibanez parlor guitar
I have a cheapo (but great sounding) Ibanez parlor acoustic. The tuning machines that came with it were always stiff and finicky. Recently, a couple of the tuner gear teeth (from the original) for the low E snapped right off while tuning, making tuning that string an impossibility, so I came across these for a replacement. The screw holes didn’t align (the Ibanez were diagonal and these replacements are centered), so I filled the factory holes and drilled tiny pilot holes for these new ones and they’re perfect. Maybe it’s just the new strings, but I swear these new tuners helped to open up the tone and resonance of the guitar. Anyway, highly recommended!

Cheaply Made
These look nice and 5/6 seem to hold a tune. However, one of them had a defective gear, which was all mangled. The turner wouldn't even rotate. I also had a problem with the screws. Even with pilot holes, I snapped one of them. Since I noticed the problem right away, I was able to process a return for a new set. I'm only putting these on a couple of cigar box guitars and I already drilled the holes to fit these. Otherwise, I would've requested a refund.

Just what was needed for balance in weight and tone. Recommended!
These machines seem to be well constructed. They operate smoothly and tune easily and stay there. That's what tuners are supposed to do. They are obviously not of the highest quality, but seem great for the price. So many guitars come equipped with heavy tuners that too soon turn difficult to turn, with rough spots causing tuning to be difficult and short lived. My main reason for buying these tuners was to decrease the headstock weight of a medium priced guitar that my son owns. The tuners did this well and performed well in the process. Not everyone agrees with me on this, but sound is a very subjective thing in a guitar. I feel that most guitars could benefit from lighter weight tuners, look at how many very upscale guitars use (another brand) open back tuners as a very expensive upgrade. These are the lightest tuners I could find easily, and with the plastic buttons (very well constructed) offered just what I needed to lighten this guitar and sweeten the overall tone and preserve the woody-ness of sound I was looking for.

Glad I found these!
Couldn’t find the right open back tuners that fit my non standard peg head holes so opted for these and they work and look great.Much better than ping tuners and at least as good as gotohs. Only caveat is that there’re newly installed so can’t vouch for longevity but the quality seems very good
