Roget's Thesaurus of Words for Intellectuals: Synonyms, Antonyms, and Related Terms Every Smart Person Should Know How…

I bought this book and it's partner Words for Writers. I discovered they are the same exact book only the words might be in a slight different order. It makes me mad to no end that they misrepresent the books as two different books entirely. Not cool!

I use the book in my novel and short story writing. I recommend this book to all writers

This word book is fun to read in my spare time. I don't consider myself an intellectual, but I do try to enhance my knowledge. At almost 70 years, I need to keep my mind active too.

Not much in the book that helped my writing skills.

Lots of sophisticated words, I just wished it was organized a little differently or at had at least an index.

I have always trusted Roget's and this is no different. When I want to sound superior, I just pop open the book and voila! Before me is a cool-ection of words ready for our next keffeeklatsch. Or Facebook.My only complaint is that the listing is a bit restricted. And not nearly as easy to use. Plus, sadly, it holds no candle to the Internet and its vast resources.However, when working on projects requiring web-avoidance, having a reference book such as this indispensable.

The words and synonyms, antonyms are all the same

Book possibly of use to students not really for native speakers and has nothing really in commmon with the original Roget's Thesaurus

its a very different type of thesaurus but once you get to know it you will enjoy it I`m sure

英語辞書は難語辞書から日常語も収録した現在の形の一般辞書に発展してきた。しかし英米の教養人のなかには、一般辞書よりも、あるいは一般辞書に加えて、難語辞典を求める欲求が根強い。難しい語を使って教養のあるところを見せてやりたいという気持ちがあるのであろう。語彙を増加・強化することによって、物事を理解し、物事を論理的に論じる能力が養成される。英米の社会では言葉使いによって評価されることが多い。豊富な語彙を駆使できる人はそれなりに高い社会的評価を受ける。学習英和辞典では難易度・頻度に応じて見出し語はA,B,C,Dに分かれているが、本辞典では概念別見出し語がA,B ランクの語で、同意語、反意語、関連度としてあげられているのがC,Dランクの難しい語(難語)である。見出し語は222ある。たとえば、mistake の見出し語項目には、同意語として、aberration, blunder, contretemps, faux pas, gaffe, mea culpa, solecism, 反意語としてdefinitude, faultlessがあがっている。つまり平易な語より難しいラテン系、ギリシャ語系の語を知るための辞典である。この辞典の良いところはすべての語にフルセンテンスの作例、引用例が付いていることである(e.g. Looking at a Japanese customer directly in the eye during conversation is considered an egregious faux pas.)。また巻末の語索引が完備しているので一種の難語辞典としても使える。ネイティブスピーカーを対象にしたシソーラスであるが、平易な語ー難語の関係に関心のある我々日本人にも参考になる点が多い。なお本書の改訂版に、Roget's Thesaurus of Words for Writers: Over 2,300 Emotive, Evocative, Descriptive Synonyms, Antonyms, and Related Terms Every Writer Should Know(2014)がある。内容が重複するがそのレビューも参照していただければ幸いである。
