The Aluminum is Too Soft for Canyoneering
The metal is too soft for canyoneering in the Colorado Plateau. If the rope gets wet and any sand sticks to it the sand will just grind away at the aluminum. Canyoneers in Utah and the west in general have asked somebody for years to make a device out of steel or stainless steel, but every manufacturer is too hung up on weight. Most canyoneering routes are glorified day hikes, so weight isn't a huge concern, and we need our equipment to work so we don't die or get stranded. I don't want a warrantee, I want a guarantee. Please, please, please, somebody make a steel belay device that isn't a standard figure 8.

I purchased this descender primarily for tree climbing. The ease of use, multiple friction settings, and being able to lock off to do work make this a great design. I have also used this for repelling and belaying. You have great control utilizing the many features of this device. The ability to use this with single or double ropes is a bonus. The horns are very functional and do not get in the way when you are not using them. Make sure to follow the manufacturers recommendations for the type and size of locking carabiner. The grommet built in to the attachment point keeps everything snug and quiet. This has replaced my other descenders.

Fantastic
This is now my preferred device for rappelling. It is fast and easy to both clip in/out and add friction.

great product
This sterling ATS rope device works as described and functions real well. I only have 2 item for advise when ordering , First the carabener hole is small and needs a small bener to hook to your harness and second it seems to work better with the smaller ropes. BUT I was IMPRESSED with how it functions Sterling Rope ATS Device

Bought. Used. Lost. Can't wait to Buy Another!
Was very pleased with this rappelling device. Loved using it...up until I dropped it into canyon pool that had very stagnant disgusting water. Was not going to retrieve that thing. I'll just buy a new one. Worth every penny. Loved the versatility it offered.

Best descender on the market
Best all around descender. Compact, easy to use lots of options for rigging, pcd, autoblock, descending, adding friction mid rappel, easy to lock off. Best of all don't have to take it off your biner while rigging, so you can't accidentally drop into the abyss.

Better than the Totem or Pirana
I've canyoneered with the Pirana, Totem, and a standard figure eight, and the ATS is my favorite by far. The asymmetrical shape provides an added half-a-step of friction which is perfect for 8mm or 8.3mm ropes one way, and 9mm or more the other.

my go to device
I don't like the piranha, but I love the ATS. Just the right amount of friction for me on single strand and easy to switch to plate mode for double strand. Easy to lock off and add friction too.
