Can you rod sewer when extendable valve is removed?

If you are referring to a flexible drain snake when you say rod sewer then yes. When the extendable valve is removed it then looks similar to a ordinary clean out.

Does the valve close automatically when there is a backup like a check valve or do you have to close it for it to work

It closes automatically. Just make sure to clean the flapper. I pull out the assembly and clean it in the spring and again in the fall. It hasn’t let me down yet. It’s the best on the market.
