How does this work? It looks like it would just slip into the gap when stepped on. Is there an attachment to the back of/under the rear seats?

No it’s not fixed to the rear seats at all, but it doesn’t slip into the gap. The panel is quite firm and supports the weight of the dog (provided it’s not a giant heavyweight dog of course). You have to make sure the straps around the front seats are evenly adjusted and tight enough, so the flat bit is properly supported, but this is easy enough to do.

I just need a middle section, do both sides fold?

Not sure what you mean, but. It is basically a covered bit of hardboard with straps either wise to attach to the head rests. The sides don't fold but the item does fold in half. However this would leave only one attaching strap unless you could 'bodge' a second one. If you are trying to create or shelf between the seats then it probably won't work.

Does the middle barrier go flat?

Yes it does, it has separate straps so you can decide not to use them and just leave the centre section flat.

Would this product fit my car?I have a 2 door coupe Toyota Celica?

I have one od these for my citreon C3 and its brilliant. I have a Briard and it gives her so much more room. My car is a 5 door. The only thing i woul say is that it fixes around both front seats so if you have to move your seat forward to get into the back i am not sure if it would work. It is easy to un clip though. I just lift one side if i need to get a passenger in the back seat.
