RUFFWEAR - Approach Full-Day Hiking Pack for Dogs, Campfire Orange, Small

MUST BE BALANCED unless your dog is asleep. Even a couple ounces will make it flop to one side. But, I'm not sure you can do anything about it other than balance it. We put four bottles of water in...take one out of each side, that sort of thing. And don't overload the dog. 20% of body weight MAX...just like humans with packs. Better is 10%

I went through 2 $40ish Outward Hound packs in two years before deciding on this one. The pack fits well and everything about it is great quality. It's what I would expect out of a good hiking backpack for humans. The zippers hold up, the straps don't slip on their own, and the D ring has held up under some serious pulling(darn chipmunks!). The handle on the back has also held up well when I've had to pick my dog up. The pack stays fairly balanced as long as I keep the contents weight distributed evenly enough. Even when she's run through some brush and trees it's not too off balance. I followed the recommended measurements when ordering for my 45lb Australian Shepherd and it fits perfectly. When the pack has gotten wet and dirty, I wait for it to dry and the dirt just brushes off and it's clean again. The bags are roomy which will be helpful when we start camping this summer and fall.Edit: Update, I have used this pack for over a year now and I still love it. Everything about it has held up very well, through brush, water, and snow. The zippers, the lifting strap, the buckles, and the D ring have all done well. I can't imagine buying another pack.

So far so good. I bought this pack for my 1yr old Border Collie / Labrador mix to use on camping and hiking trips. The pack fits well (i made sure to measure his chest size before ordering) and doesn't seem to shift too much if the weight is properly distributed. The pouches easily hold enough water (I used 2 of the the platypus 1liter bottles), 2 collapsible dog bowls and dog food. As of today I have used the pack once on a 3 mile hike in Carolina Beach State Park, NC.

3 things I really like about this bag. I love the size of the pouches. I can fit everything my dog needs for his day hike including water, food, treats, his bowls, and extra leash. Everything just fits well. I also really like the handle on the top as well as the leash attachment. The stitching is durable and I can tell this bag will last me a long time. My dog and I have already been on about 5 hikes 12miles each hike and the bag still looks new, minus the dirt and sap. The last thing I really like about this bag is the way it fits on my dog. He doesn't mind wear it at all. In fact when I get it out to put it on him he gets all excited cause he knows we are going for a hike. I have had this bag for a few months now and I am very pleased with this purchase. They really made a great product!

My 45lb Carolina Dog was literally right between the small and medium sizing at exactly 27 inches around the girth. She has very long legs and a thin, lanky body, so I was super worried about the fit. I took everyone's advice and went with the smaller size, and it was definitely the right choice.This pack can hold a TON! But other reviewers are right, it does bulge a bit without any compression straps. When she ran, the two bags on the pack would flap up and down.It lasted just fine on an 11 mile backpacking trip, but ended up with a few scuffs and scrapes from branches and brush (and a solid 1 minute roll in bear poop) as she walked along the overgrown trail. However, I have no doubts it will hold up for a very long time. It's a solid pack.My only complaint is that it's virtually impossible to know if the pack is tight enough (because every dog is different), which ended up in some under-arm chaffing.

While I love having a pack for my dog, the construction makes it very hard to balance and the two large pockets flap every time he runs or moves. Human backpacks fit close to the body and do everything possible to mimic our movements, why can't a dog's pack do the same? Our main purpose was for day hikes so he could carry his own water, but our water bottles don't carry very well in the pack and are hard to access.

Got this for my hyper dog and amazingly wearing it does calm her down a bit. The small fit my 67 lb pit bull mix beautifully. Still need to put things in pack for her to carry. Packs are a nice size. Can easily fit water bottles. A rolled up tshirt would fit in one. Smaller zippered pocket can hold keys and your IDs. Will test pack with the next dreaded vet appointment to see if the distraction of hiking packs will help with her spastic behavior. I believe it will!!

I bought this for my Rhodesian/Vizsla Mix who "in between" Ruffwear sizes. I'm training him as a service dog to carry items and most packs don't fit the bill. I ordered patches and additional equipment from Leerburg with this and we're off! Camera carrying assistant extraordinaire. He can also carry his own food, water and poo poo on our 1/2 day hike! Totally worth the investment. It runs big so always size down if you are gonna get it.

My english cocker spaniel loves it. it fit very well and does not interfere with the dogs movements. big pocket for lots of light stuff.

Fits really well for my medium sized crossbreed. Very handle when you cannot be bothered to carry your own things! Nelly really likes it and took to wearing it straight away.

Wir hatten uns beide Rucksäcke von Ruffwear in der Größe S senden lassen (Palisades- 131 EUR und Approach-Pack 71 EUR). Beide sind super verarbeitet und überzeugen. Für unsere schmale Vizsla-Hündin (1 Jahr, Schulterhöhe 55cm, 19kg) passt das Geschirr in Größe S perfekt und hat noch Luft, falls sie im Brustkorb breiter wird. Das Geschirr ist übrigens bei beiden Rucksäcken identisch. Allerdings sind die Packtaschen unterschiedlich breit montiert (Approach ca. 14cm Abstand, Palisades ca. 21cm, siehe angehängtes Foto). Dadurch sitzt der Approach bei unserer schmal gebauten Hündin einfach viel besser und sie hat den Rucksack mit Freude sofort angenommen. Wir freuen uns schon auf die erste Tour.Hier noch unsere Erfahrungen im Vergleich:Der Palisades Pack hat 4 tolle Vorteile: 1) Abnehmbarer Rucksack, so dass das Geschirr auch solo verwendet werden kann. 2) Er ist wasserdicht mit gummierten Reißverschlüsse, so dass kein zusätzlicher Regenschutz gekauft werden muss. 3) Die großen Packtaschen sind unterteilt und können zudem über Gummizüge auf den Inhalt angepasst werden, so dass das Gewicht für eine optimale Verteilung nah am Körper gehalten wird 4) im Lieferumfang sind 2 Wasserbeutel inklusive. Ein perfekter Rucksack, der keine Wünsche offen lässt.Vielleicht kann sich Ruffwear noch etwas einfallen lassen, um die Rückenbreite der Packtaschen zu verstellen?! Dann hätten wir uns gern für das "Profimodell" entschieden.Der Approach Pack ist ebenso geräumig. Im Volumen unterscheidet die Rucksäcke nur 1L. Das Probepacken zeigte: Wir bekommen im Approach alles prima untergebracht. Für Krimskrams gibt es zwei statt vier kleine Taschen. – Und das nahezu zum halben Preis. :) Wir wollen den Rucksack hauptsächlich im Sommer nutzen, da genügt uns das wasserabweisende Material des Approach. Gegebenenfalls können wir den Regenschutz nachrüsten... Die Packtaschen sind unten auch mit einer lösbaren Schlaufe am Geschirr fixiert, so dass diese eng am Körper anliegen. Da wackelt und rutscht nix. Ein toller Rucksack zum Einstieg, der für Tagestouren und kleine Wanderungen völlig ausreichend erscheint.Entscheidend für uns war, wie gesagt, vor allem ein wackelfeier Sitz mit einer guten Gewichtsverteilung. Hier scheint der Approach besser für schmal gebaute Hunde (z.B. Viszla, Windhunde, …) geeignet zu sein und der Palisades besser für normal und breit gebaute Hunde (z.B. BorderCollie, Retriver…). – In jedem Fall die besten Hunderucksäcke, die ich je in der Hand hatte.

Sehr guter Hunderucksack. Ich habe ihn für mein Bordertier bestellt, weil er (trotz geistiger Beschäftigung) auf Wanderungen uä. immer wie ein Ochse (auch nach 25 km) an der Leine zerrt. Mit diesen Packtaschen hat er noch zusätzlich eine Aufgabe und er macht es toll. Mit 500 g/ Seite kommt er super gut zurecht. Die Taschen sind sehr robust und schränken den Hund nicht er. Er schafft es sich mit den Dingern zu kullern und mit anderen Hunden Rennspiele zu veranstallten. Auch wenn er mal durch Gestrüpp macht, zerreißt der Stoff nicht gleich.Die Taschen sind ihr Geld absolut wert und ich würd sie auf jeden Fall wieder kaufen.

Gut durchdacht; wenn der Rucksack akzeptiert wird dann lässt er sich gut anlegen.Allerdings in kleinster Gurteinstellung, für unseren mittelgrossen Hund ( Rissehöhe 40cm) sind die Beuteltaschen etwas zu groß.Beim 'pippeln' schrabern diese dann am Baum/Strauch.Am Anfang führte das zu 'Pippel-Interuptus'. Unsere Töle hatte es schnell raus, wie's besser geht. ;-)Somit ist Small etwas irritierend. Aber Hersteller weist extra daraufhin, Größe ab zumessen. Ein extra Plus für den Hersteller!Wenn Beuteltaschen den Grössenmassen angepasst werden, dann ist dieses Produkt perfekt!Material und Verarbeitung sind dem Preis angemessen. Alles in allem...Gutes Produkt!
