Would the small medium be appropriate for my 5 yr old son?

The SM/M that I purchased fit my 9 yr old to adult (female) client's/athletes. They may be big for a 5yr old unless he has hands are about as big as yours.

Has anyone used these for CKO kickboxing?

CKO is just a kickboxing franchise. We use these gloves for all forms of punching and grappling. We also use them when performing circuits that mix resistance training & plyos with punching & grappling at the Kalinowski Performance Academy. They have held up very well and our members love them.

Are these for use for kickboxing/cardio kickboxing?

Yes, they can be used for kickboxing/cardio kickboxing. But you may find the finger loops very uncomfortable, especially if hitting a bag.
