Can device be attached to button?

Yes! I use a plastic zip tie threaded through the loop at the end of the quick connector, then you attach the zip tie as tightly as you can onto the button on the guitar so that it cannot slip off.

would this support an electric hollow body of about 12 pounds?

The locking mechanism is heavy plastic and clips tightly. I would trust it with my Strat.

When strapless, does headstock tie dangle/get in your way?

Like any strap, when pulled over head it is out of way. My brother is professional and has same one for acoustic without knob/nut in body.

How can I shorten it? It adds so much length to my leather strap the guitar hangs too low to play.

Most straps are adjustable, so any extra length is reduced at the strap itself.
