Ok, this is ridiculous. i just bought this. it comes with no directions whatsoever. i put it into my mac, and it does nothing. how do i get it to work

Oh no, it works on my Mac Book Pro (Retina, 15-inch, 2013 Model) just fine. Maybe worth checking if it can be read by other machines. If not then it could be hint that your JetDrive is defect and should be replaced.

Can i use this for microsoft surface book ?

I can't say for sure, but it is build specifically for the MacBook Pro. Given that the depth of the SD slot on different MacBooks, although slight, is enough to make it impossible for the card to fit into another version of the same line of computers, it would be absolutely luck of the draw if the two slots were so identical that it would work without issues.

Is this one work with 2010 macbook pro 15inch? Mine is without retina display

It does NOT, as far as I know this one only works with 15 inch retina display model Strangely as SD card slot measurement is different within all 13 and 15 inch macbooks and also different in macbook air. When you buy it make sure you choose the right one for your computer model. Hope it helps

about 2/3 length of standard sd card, actually it is 2.2cm length from the end to the bottom of embossment. you can insert a standard sd card into your socket, and measure how much deepth sd card it will suck in. if deepth is more than 2.2cm, then this jetdrive won`t work on your laptop.
