A wonderful little book
We love Chris Riddell's books and this one does not disappoint. This is a review of a 8 years old reader who insisted on giving it 5 stars: "A very exciting and wonderful book that can take your breath away in some places because it has a lot of unexpected and surprising things. And of course I loved pictures". I'd did too, and I might add that the book will also please an adult reader with funny, imaginative tale full of literary and musical references.

Amazing illustrations but complex. odd writing
The illustrations Will be the main selling point or enjoyable benefit from this book. The pictures tell the story that the words over complicate. The other benefit would be the creativity that the author uses in the story such as giving cute creative alterations to famous names such as Jane Ear, Plain Austen, Nonsense and Nonsensibility, Hands Christmas Anderson, Homily Dickenson, etc. So there is some mild humor elements. Certainly it’s creative and brilliant that he puts in direct references to all of these great literary fiction authors and characters. However, no child is going to appreciate or understand these parodies whatsoever so it’s kind of pointless. The problem is with the actual text story writing it is beyond complicates possible to keep track or visualize what’s happening most of the time. He comes up with such creative names for locations, people, objects, that are weird and quirky, and there are so many names for these things in a single paragraph. So many characters to keep up with it gets confusing. And the words are kind of long and complicated. I am an adult who reads children’s literature to teach it at the college level and this is not one that I would recommend other than for the pictures.
