Good alternative to heavy boots with one concern
Let me preface this by saying that I'm a long-time construction worker (ironworker since 95 and general construction for the last 3 years) and have always had 10" leather boots. I fell in love with non-metallic toes several years ago, but my recent transition into more of a management role means I can afford to have footwear less... beefy. I chose this brand based on the recommendations of several other field office folks, and I was a little bothered by the fact that the selection of non-metallic toes is zero. I know last year they offered a couple styles with them, but even on their website I can't find any current offerings. Every time I clicked on anything other than a steel toe in the option box, I got the "Ooops, your search returned no results" message. Anyway, these boots came through Prime quickly and well-packed. Keen's packaging is pretty attractive and also kept the boots from scuffing. The uppers on the boots seem very stiff and I made sure to only wear them for a few hours each of the first couple days to break the shoes (and my feet) in properly. One thing that I didn't see listed anywhere was that they come laced with the multi-color ones shown in the pics, but also have a solid black spare pair. Nice touch for when these break. The reflective striping on the nylon bands and eyelets is very reflective... I'll be curious to see how it holds up. The "gargoyle" color palette is pretty cool for me, since for some reason brown boots seem to bug me. The soles are noisier than most boots, probably due to a harder sole compound. I noticed this trying to walk quietly out of the house on wood floors this AM without waking my wife at 5 AM. There's some definite clunking which (at least in the early stages) translates into a stiffer overall sole. As far as the weight goes, they are fairly light but the toes are clearly the heavy end. Composite toes would help this out immensely, while also giving better thermal insulation on cold days (and possibly easier grasp of electrical hazard ratings). Comfort wise, after a little break-in these boots seem very nice. They are a snug fit while allowing my toes to have a little wiggle room but still have ankle support. I think my only concern is with the laces. They seem a little thin and there is a lot of friction between the nylon webbing eyelets and the lace. The last pair of shoes I had with this style lace/eyelet ate laces about every 9 months. By contrast, my Matterhorn boots with metal speed lace eyelets never needed replacement over the 30 months I had them. If the laces snap or the eyelets show wear, I'll update but I would definitely recommend these boots.UPDATE 15-Sep-12 - Clean and condition the leather regularly!!! After a few months the leather is already distressing near where the toe bend is, from the lowest eyelet to the sole. A friend also has Keens and his got holes in both boots in the same place after just over a year. He and I are both field office guys, so we aren't abusing the boots like a lot of general construction workers would. The laces themselves are holding up, so the eyelet concern I mentioned earlier might be a moot point. For $150 I expected something more durable, but I will see how it goes. Monthly conditioning will help but I never had to do this so often with any other boots in the 23 years I've been in construction.

Way better then old style leather work boots!
So far I love this boot. Still wearing my 10 month old pair, Just ordered a second pair. I'm a heavy boot user male 200lbs and live near Red Wing MN so have tried Redwing, Irishhsetters and other big leather brands. Some people can get these old style leather boots to last years, not me I would go through 1-2 pairs a year. This was my first Keen boot. Sorry to say hometown boot maker these are No comparison. The Keen was way more comfortable from day one and stayed that way. Lighter on the feet. NO sore feet at end of day, more water proof (except in deep snow), warm in the winter even down to 0F or colder if moving and walking. But not to hot in the summer and I'm a foot sweeter. I do spray the inside every evening with Lysol and they still do not smell and still have the Keen insoles, My other boots I would have been through 2 or 3 insoles by now trying to control odor. The toes would have been wore out and I would still getting sore from the leather over my inseam and wearing through by now.. I wear them for remodeling work (Old farm house, framing, concrete, roofing, etc) daily walks in the woods and snow (up to 4"), trips to boundary waters canoeing, yard work, wheeling in my jeep, etc. And now have even taken to wearing them out for the evening as a winter boot or to church since I like them so much and don't look to much out of place. I usually wear out my toes completely through by now, not these boots, love the toes. And no wear or tear out on the sides or inseams like my other boots. I usually save my old boots to wear for really dirty work like concrete pours, shoveling mud etc but not this time I tossed all my old boots in the trash, not worth going back. The only issues so far with my Keens are I cut the side of the sole with a saw saw blade doing a roof demolition (not the boots fault), the shoe laces wore out, a little of sole edge loosening 1/4" on back from pulling them off with my other boot toe, some leather fading ( I never treated them once unlike my other boots it was monthly or more, so I suppose one treatment would bring the leather back). and last one eyelet tore through. Overall Good job Keen! Redwing please take notice. If your a dedicated leather boot wearer then you need to try these, I'm sold.

Most Comfortable Boot after 31 years working in Industrial Plants - and even work well for hunting.
First, let me say that I am 6'3" and have issues with Gout. After trying many boots, these are one of the few that I can actually wear without causing Gout flare up.The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I don't like the lace system. Metal eyelets would be better. And the final catch hook for the laces (at the top) results in too much stress on the laces, resulting in premature wearing of the laces.I wear these boots EVERY SINGLE WORKDAY of the year, and the pair I am wearing now are 2 years old. THe soles of the boots arre still good, but some of the little pieces of rubber soles come off the edges (I clipped them off with scissors) - but the soles in general are perfectly fine. It's merely a nuisance, but doesn't actually affect anything.Other than that... thee boots are AWESOME! They are BY FAR the most comfortable boot I have ever worn in 31 years working in an industrial plant which requires hard toed boots. I have also taken these boot bow-hunting and wore them out in the field through mud, and even snow.Last year I tried some Danner Boots for a while (which worked ok) but ended up going back to these Keens because the Keens were more comfortable. At that time I complained a bit about the Keens (mainly because of the issues on the soles), but to be honest... I'm back to the Keens.I now have a 2nd pair of Keen Detroits - brand new - sitting on the shelf - waiting for my first pair to wear out - which hasn't happened yet after 2 years. Finally I would say that they length of the boot is standard (i.e. a size 13 is a normal size 13), but the width is a little narrower IMO, and I ordered a 13 EE instead of standard width. But then that could just be because of my gout.
