How heavy is this item?

Not at all heavy, however its sturdy and not flimsy. Its very well made and I have used mine as benches that my children use in a small flat as they have no space for storage , let alone to put furniture in so they are using them for sitting on and no issues with taking their weight. Does this need to be built

It arrived flat and just folds out. No assembly or tools required.

Is this strong enough to hold small dumbell weights and other small but heavy gym equipment?

Probably okay for a small dumbbell set and flat equipment. sides are not that strong although it with the top on can take your weight. Depends on size of items I expect. Takes clothing with no problems. Hope this is helpful.

Can I use this as a step ladder? It says 300 kg max load, but that's for sitting. Would there be any problem standing directly on top of it?

It’s not that strong no. I stood on mine and it caved in. It’s Ok but quite wobbly now and a bit dented. So I wouldn’t recommend standing on it. Good for storage though
